As a mechanic I can tell you for a Fact that even 10k oil changes is too long. It maybe true it still lubricates but it leaves build up inside the engine. Also causing more oil consumption and leaks. It won't be noticeable till after 100k but I feel manufacturers are only doing these long oil changes because they can. They won't have engines failing before warranty.

I got mine done at BMW Seattle for free. They said it must have at least 1,201 miles on it for BMW to pay for it. Under 1,200 miles and the oil change is on you.

True, but you are the first and only one on this forum that got it done for free. All other dealerships nationwide are saying no, which makes me wonder why. Obviously I'd love it if BMW Seattle is willing to do it for me free of charge. Will report back in a few weeks when my car is re-delivered. I drove 5 miles short of 1200 in Europe, lol.

Today I took my car for its 1200 mile oil change. It cost me $59.39. Makes me wonder, maybe some dealerships eat the 59 bucks and keep a happy customer.

OK so what reason do you think they lowered the mileage between oil changes from 15 to 10k?
Did winters get worse? Did oil change and suddenly have less life? Did the motors have any significant changes? No After working on cars for 15 years you begin to see patterns . Ever since CBS 15 k oil changes came around I started to see strange problems that had never occurred before. Like bad oil sludge build up. Lists of vanos faults. Noisy valves lifters. You open up and engine with 15k oil changes and see the entire cylinder head coated with oil sludge. Oil not draining out of the head because it can't get past the return hole to the sump. That NEVER HAPPENED on frequently changed oil. I see cars come in 5 QTS low on oil. The oil sensor still reading full. It then has to be replaced because I can't clean it without damage. If you think that your engine likes running 5 QTS low on oil. Remind me to never buy your cars used. Last edited by ciwhamc; 05-31-2014 at 11:19 PM.. |

I'm no mechanic but have heard pretty much that exact same stuff that ciwhamc mentions from personal friends who have worked on these kinds of cars for years.
I still only do the recommended intervals since I have no plans on keeping cars past 100k anymore or possibly even past warranty. If it was a car I was buying that I planned to keep forever, I'd probably halve that recommended interval for oil changes. |

I think BMW created alot of this confusion themselves by taking a 235is and calling it an ///M235i
so they label it as an M but say plain out, its not really an M.... message is kind of confusing. every 5K miles regardless of what anyone says. I dont plan to do 1,200 but do plan to change it up before or around 5k on my dime. |

I could care less what the recommendation or requirements are for an oil change...i change my oil twice a year, its around $50 for oil and filter (diy) so its a small amount to make myself feel better

Google this for you people that want an oil change every 200 miles. Consumer Reports ran a two year study back in 1996 on the New York City taxi fleet. They changed half the cars at 3,000 like some mechanics suggested and the other half at 7,500 miles (none synthetic) for two years with mileage over 100K and after two years they concluded like me that if you changed the oil at 3,000 the companies were pissing good money away. No statistical differences in service level or wear and tear on the autos. It may make you feel like something special but your wasting money.

I endorse a 7500 mile oil change. I might do 5 k just because it will make even changes with the dealer 10k. Though at my shop we recommend 7500.

Not to advocate either way, but I really doubt an 18 year old study can be considered credible this day in age with all the changes in both engines and advancements in motor oil. Especially when the study was based on fleet vehicles that rack up those 3000 or 6000 miles in a matter of weeks and where the engines are almost always running which is unlike how the majority of cars are driven. With my E90 335i, the recommended oil change interval was 15k miles or 12 months, however the computer determined when an oil change was needed based on how the car was driven and a ton of other factors. I typically was notified that an oil change was due after about 10k miles because I drove that car extremely hard every single day for a very long commute. So, even with their 15k recommended interval, that was never set in stone and they would do the oil change service as long as the car asked for it. |
