Oil Usage?
What is everyone seeing for oil usage on their M235i's? I had to add a quart at about 3200 miles. Is that normal usage for the turbo 6?

You probably have close to the most mileage. I don't know if anyone can help you.
Maybe some of the 2012+ 135i crowd can tell us their experience. Found the 1 series thread: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=350164 Last edited by DanG; 05-17-2014 at 12:45 AM.. |

I changed my oil at 1,200 miles and let it drain for almost 2 hours and I measured ~6 quarts drained. I added 6 quarts back in and the car measured right at the full mark when you run the oil measurement test.
So I don't believe I lost really any oil. I was pretty good about behaving on the throttle during the break-in period. |

The N54 seems to burn oil faster than the oil change interval. About halfway it would need a top off. N55 may be similar. If you are keeping your car, may be worth doing a mid year oil change out of pocket.

I drive it relatively hard, but fairly tame for the break-in, of course. I will keep an eye on it. The S54 in my M Coupe burns about the same (always has). I just expected to burn less on the more modern engine.

Considering there is no dipstick.. how are you guys getting your oil level measurements? The iDrive does not give me any level info.. just that the oil level is OK.

You can "measure" it with idrive and it will give you a fullness meter. Not just an ok. Must be engine on in park flat surface.
4000 Km in mines still full. Regardless keep your quart in the trunk and top up if it asks. |

I am at 3200 mls and it says full. But I did a 1200 miles service. At 1200 it was not low and currently shows full.

My current BMW has not burned a drop of oil in roughly 90k miles....Only thing I can say is I followed break in procedure according to BMW went up to 100mph (on the autobahn) but never over until the first 1,200 miles were over....I am sure there is a small amount of oil consumption with this engine not matter what though

I got a message for a split second on the highway the other night (driving rather quickly) that I was a quart low. Thought I had some at home, but I didn't. So when I started it up the next morning, no code and is reading in the normal range via the i-drive.
Not sure what to make of that.

You may find after your next oil change oil loss disappears. Best thing to do is keep records and notify service department when you make a visit. There is a section in the owners manual discussing when you may need to top off oil and the oil brands you may encounter out on the road and how to handle not finding BMW spec'd oil - so it tells me some oil usage on some engines is not unexpected. |

It depends on the driving conditions, etc. my previous 2011 E90 335i would take a quart every 5K miles or so - most of my driving was/is New York City driving with lots of stop and go.

N55 has 6.5l or 6.8 Quarts capacity. Be careful not to overfill, worst than being a little under full.

Had to top off at 7,500 miles...
This is normal, regardless of break-in period. If your dealer has sold a few 235's, ask the service gods, they will confirm it. |
