Sorry to hear about the issues. I understand waiting for the diagnosics before saying too much (and anything right now would be conjecture), but any idea what might have happened? Was it engine, transmissions, drivetrain or something else?

Boy, everyone sure is all too anxious to throw in the towel for the M235i as a racing platform. This is a single failure, and we don't even know what went wrong yet. Spend a few days at the track and you'll see that plenty of far more expensive and dedicated cars experience failures when driven hard around a track.
Except Porsches. Porsches never break. Ever. Never ever... or so I hear

I think it was just that they didn't want to have to give feedback on the LSD
Just kidding... It was fun watching I was hoping they would do really well as I like the M235 and would like to get one. Hopefully it was just one of those things.

This was an important outing for BMW given a new model that has won over journalist and buyers from the start. Having a failure of the car less than 1/2 through could result in some really bad press.
Not having a clue what the issue might be I would like to throw out a wild guess and say it was VANOS related failure. |

We are both right.
BMW M235i Coupe: Six-cylinder in-line petrol engine with M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology (twin-scroll turbochargers, High Precision Direct Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing, Double-Vanos). My gut feeling there was a breakdown with the Double-Vanos system leading to the engine failure. Last edited by Delnari; 05-07-2014 at 05:43 PM.. |

Unless someone has some additional information, all you can do is speculate, which leads to incorrect information circulating the forums. You end up with shit like, "I heard the M235i has VANOS issues in the OLoA race," which would be completely unsubstantiated at this point.

I hope we find out what the actual cause was for this. Granted it was put through some pretty hard paces, but it's billed as the ultimate driving machine. Mine does just fine as a DD, but it limps at the track, so it's a FAIL. Before going this route again (and I'm ready any time I choose), I want to know that I won't be disappointed again.

Here's the video of our afternoon run at NOLA, a track just 14 miles south on New Orleans.
Mike had a good run with a 6:18.084 time over three laps from a standing start which placed us 19th overall in this time trial. The day we were there the Governor of Louisiana was scheduled at the track to make an announcement about an Indy Car race in 2015.

From NOLA we headed east along I-10 to Mobile International Speedway for a quick blast around this 0.5 mile paved oval to conclude Monday's events.
Mike completed the three laps in 1:13.302 minutes. After the conclusion of the time trial we headed towards Atlanta for a few hours sleep before attacking Atlanta Motorsports Park.

Thanks Steve, you guys were doing a fantastic job given the lack of sleep and stress of all these events so close to one another. Leading both classes was incredible.
As a M235i owner who is looking to add M Performance parts I'm concerned about what caused the mechanical breakdown. Before I starting adding additional performance parts I want to understand what lessons can be learned from your experience with the car, and how performance upgrades may have effect the car overall at these track events. |

Highly interested in what caused the failure. Please keep us focused, as some of us are going FBO and might want to consider sinking our money elsewhere if this engine is failure due to strength issues.

This is the same motor in all other N55 powered cars. I would think its probably an electrical gremlin rather than anything major. Remember, there was no engine mods done. There is already a few people making upward of 370whp on here. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I’d feel much better if they’d just tell us what broke as I’m quite confident they’ve figured it out by now so we can make sure we don’t have similar issues while on track. I think this could be a huge deal I feel BMW is having a hard time producing cars that are track capable. I can’t remember the last time I left the track happy. My 135i just boils the brake fluid only after a few hard laps no matter what I seem to do.
