the Audi interior getting a 10 is a joke. the inside is as much of a bore as this car is to drive. I'm pro Audi and loved driving around in the A4, but test driving the A3 put me to sleep.
also found the comment about the RFT losing traction at high speeds a bit dramatic. so much RFT hate. |

2 other points:
why the direct comparison to Mazda for the Mercedes? found that bizarre. and the review wasted two lengthy paragraphs about price gouging for features (which we all know already), then states the review has nothing to do with pricing, then states that the Bimmer outperformed (albeit "fractionally") the Audi...what? subtract out the "features/amenities" scores (really? a 5 point spread because the A3 comes standard w a moonroof and leather?) and rear seat comfort and space (I'm driving a 2 door coupe - I clearly don't have kids) and the BMW wins. silly "comparo" |

Thanks for the article. Reading through it I seem to think this is a biased comparison. Not because I love the new 2 series, but because when you look at the final stats there is no way the 228i doesn't come out in top. First of all they say the BMW is more fun to drive, it's faster, fuel economy is the same and is a better drivers car. Looks are subjective and I for one do not believe the Audi looks better inside or out. It is very run of the mill and plain. Kinda like a rebadged Jetta. They said ONLYy having two doors like it is a bad thing. Most if us who are in the market for this type of car only wants two doors. I just really don't think the 2 series should be compared to these sedans. It is an entirely different car targeted at enthusiasts or someone who wants a fast small sport car which is exactly what it is. I am new to the BMW family and am starting to see the anti bimmer hate I use to hear about.

I think the main handicap for the 2er is those pathetic S001 RFT's. Once the "track pack" or whatever has PSS's is out, it should fix the poor braking and handling numbers this 2er posted.

I get what you mean about the driving experience being a bit boring. My A4 3.2 Quattro was in the shop last summer and I had an LCI A4 2.0T Quattro as a loaner for a week. That car is definitely just as nice if not nicer than my car, but as I got used to it I realized that I'd be bored with that engine as soon as the new car smell wore off. My 3.2 may get terrible MPG (10.7 city, 16.8 highway--I probably drive too fast), but the motor sounds great, the interior is attractive, durable, and quiet, the suspension is comfortable and sporty (I have Drive Select), the steering is mostly talkative, and it's plenty fast for a 3800 lb. car with only 265 hp (I've clocked 0-60 under six seconds). But that 2.0T, as torquey and peppy as it was to drive around town, wasn't giving me enough to feel like I had bought a substantial car. It felt inert, though solid, and I was wanting for more of something. I thought about upgrading to a 2013 but my 3.2 was such a rare find in great condition that I can't see myself giving it up until it croaks. |

So, the 228 beat Audi in almost every performance figure but scored lower? Umm ya ok. Then, it's tested with RFT, but it lists the top speed at 153, which we know is wrong, RFT decrease the top speed to 130. I don't think they even knew what tires they had. They lost some credibility with this one.

Exactly. Of course riccappa doesn't get the 228i in the UK, but for the US:
On the M235i, PSS's provide the 250kph (155mph) speed governor, A/S will be 210kph (130mph). On the 228i, the standard summer RFT's are 250 and the A/S are 210. The Track Package will add the PSS's too, so there will be two 228i options for 250kph governors. Also, the 153mph recorded top speed is standard BMW practice where the cheaper cars are usually slightly slower than the more expensive cars. It's been normal that a 1/2 is usually capable of 153, a 3/4 is 155 and a 5/6 is 157 while the M's are usually in the 159 range, even though they're all officially governed to 155. You wouldn't want an embarrassment on the Autobahn. |

I've driven both.. Picked the 228i for a reason. Way more fun to drive than the A3.
