I know it's all relative and some of you were hoping for better, but I serve as an anecdotal reminder that it could always be worse.
Making the jump to an M235i in August after 7 years in a 5.7L Hemi-equipped Jeep Grand Cherokee. Before that I had some seat time in a highly modded 03 Evo and 04 STi. The thought of beating on a relatively fast car all day and getting anything better than 20mpg makes my wallet smile. And to think that number could skyrocket over 30mpg if I decide to behave on the highway?! My days of burning $65 tanks in ~3 hours are almost over! : |

I can see how someone would get 20-22 and even less if they are driving hard, jack rabbit starts at every light and stop, or revving out the engine all the time. Getting MPG averages on forums isn't reliable because many of us drive differently, on different terrain, city, suburban, country, tire pressures, how often and how many passengers, etc... After my third tank of gas, I decided to reset my MPG meter. Since then, I've averaged 23.0 MPG. I have done a little more highway driving, but it also appears the MPG is improving as I reach the last quarter of the break-in period. |

I got 25.5 mpg on my last tank, which was 75% highway (cruise set at 79 mph), and a few spirited runs as I finally hit my 1200 mile threshold.

M235i Auto: Reset the in dash average MPG before my commute to work this morning. 27 miles with about 6 miles surface streets and 21 highway with a lot of stop n go. Mostly in ECO pro mode. Dash showed 28.4 MPG. I will check the in dash display vs. calculated for my commute week which will be almost a complete tank.

Yeah now that I'm approaching 2000 mile mark, I'm getting average 25mpg with mixed eco-pro and sport driving. Prolly helps that now the tires, engine, and everything are worn in.

Ok, my first full week, 5 days commuting. Trip computer showed 28.3, calculated to 28.8. This is 54 miles a day with about 12 of that surface streets and the rest highway with a lot on stop n go. Mostly ECO mode. I am very happy with the results. Certainly has met my expectations.

Assuming that's w/8 speed auto?
Other "bonus" is that C&D just ran it 4.9 to 60 But...they dinged it for (once again in late bimmers) steering, soft suspension and tires. To me the article basically says the 228i had every dynamic advantage but managed to under-deliver in the handling/feedback department enough so to give the win to the FWD A3? I recently drove a loaded 228i Msport with an 8speed and not only do I no longer care about the A3 I'm even considering giving up the 3rd pedal. It goes great and amazingly sounds great (fake?), is more comfortable and gets better mileage than my 128. The new GTI will be the cost effective/more practical front runner (4 doors would help) Pricing/packaging BMWs has gotten really infuriating lately- tech pkg in order to stream music- really? Can't use the $ from a cheaper manually equipped car to purchase overpriced options, no more free red, no more free sunroof, man they just keep taking...they're really sticking it to the enthusiast on the tranny and it irks me.

M235i with AT - I did a 350km trip a couple weeks ago. Almost all country roads doing 80-100km/h and a couple short trips in there. Weather was chilly at between 3-5C. Finished up at 7.9L/100km which is 29.77mpg. Pretty damn good considering the temperature. Much better than my Lexus IS350 was getting, and the BMW is a much, much faster car too. Really happy about the combination of free maintenance, fuel economy and performance I'm getting for around the $52,000CAD price point. Not sure what else I could have gotten at that price that would even come close.

Yes I have the ZF8 Auto. I think this tranny is a big reason why the mileage and performance are good.
This car is such an improvement over my 128. Way better power (everywhere) and a smoother ride (I didn't get the M Sport because it was too rough on our roads in Southern Alberta). Better fuel mileage, than my 128. The 228 is significantly quieter than the 128 and I have the shitty square Pirelli Runflats. The six speed auto in the 128 was horrible and this 8 speed is better than fantastic. I like the extra width of the car (decent cup holders and centre armrest). Way way better electronics including the navigation, stereo (HK to HK), Bluetooth interface, headlights, etc. I don't like the lower bolsters on the seats, the dead petal, idle roughness and back end. Overall a great improvement over the 128. I went in to buy a 235 (actually I went to buy a S4 but couldn't make a deal) and ended up with the 228. The N20 is really that good (5 sec 0-60 is damn good). After driving the 228 and 235 back to back, I chose the 228. The 235 has longer legs but in everyday driving, the 228 is very good. The 228 is simply a commuting car for me at about 60 miles/day. 3M covering the front and a windshield every year. I didn't want the x drive and I will drive this car all winter, just like I drove the 128 (just need good winter tires). So far so good, but we will see how it goes - I have owned several BMW's. |
