Specifically on the East coast were it's humid and near the sea. Oxidization occurs when moisture meets steel.

That was just a reflection on the caliper.
I've noticed this kind of discoloration on previous cars just not to this extent. Sounds like it's normal though.

Thanks, was worried for a second. I have had this on every car I have ever owned. Annoying and ugly but no cause for concern.

Yup, typical iron oxidation of the rotors. No worries.

After a nice drive the brake pads will scrap off all the oxidation.

If it doesn't, then take it to the dealer. But, yes, a layer of rust can and does form if the rotor got wet while not driving. |

I agree w everything above that has been said. It is completely normal after a wash for the rotors to rust a bit; nothing to worry about and a short drive and application of the brakes will take care of the problem. Yes it's a pain, but not a problem.
A more serious problem w BMWs is that eventually the brake rotor's central hub will rust out, and there's nothing u can do to stop this. Makes an expensive car look a bit cheaper. My 335i's rear rotor hubs rusted out within 1.5 to 2 years. An even more serious problem - and regrettably I've had this rare one too - is when the car sits in rain for a week or two w/o being driven, and the rotors develop a marginal (and I mean so marginal u can't see or feel it) warp to them. The rotors will actually squeak when the car is driven w/o applying the brakes, as the rotors rub up against the brake pads. Although the dealer will recommend replacement, in time (a few short months) usually the rotors will grind back into perfect shape in most instances (at least they did for me). Above all else never trust your brake wear gauge or the dealer to decide when the brakes need replacing. The gauge often gets miscalibrated (and will need a software reset), and the dealer will want to replace brakes even when there's lots of wear (say 25%) left on them. My gauge worked well for the front brakes but overestimated the wear for the rear brakes (and needed to be recalibrated during a routine service). I laugh because the dealer's first inclination was that the brakes needed replacing, when all that was required was a gauge reset. Last edited by Dr. Indiana Jones; 04-14-2014 at 03:47 PM.. |

Just fyi, the manual actually says if the brakes get wet to take them out and use them for a bit to dry them out before letting the car sit to get rid of specifically this.
