I see your point. I think in retrospect they probably wish they had fastracked their new 1 series FWD CLA competitor. I doubt though that a 2 series GC would be comparable price wise to a CLA starting at 30K. |

So Audi and Mercedes with their A3/S3 and CLA models would be dealing with a similar situation, i.e. no customer demand and no market?

In another post from Scott, he triumphaly anounces the coming of the X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, X4M, X5M, X6M, X7M, and a bunch of FW based stuff. Also, there's a 3, a 3 five doors, a 4 (well a 3 2 doors), and a 4 gc, which is ho, a 3 five doors. That was really necessary, obviously.

To me a 2 Series GC makes more sense than a 4 or 6 GC which are pretty much cosmetic changes to the 3 and 5. That being said BMW is successful because their profit margins are so high so the can reinvest in the brand. They probably see a 2 GC as a lower margin product that cuts into the 3. I had to make product decisions like this when I ran a company. It comes down to whether they think the 2 GC will greatly expand the new people into the brand or just trading higher end sales from the 320 which would be the same price point. As a consumer it's easy to say build and they will come but why build a product you make 6% on when you can sell a product at 10% net profit. In the end the competition may dictate they have to build it even if its not that profitable.

How can anyone say with a straight face that a 4dr 2ER would create a “high risk of substitution” right after the anounce of the 4er grand coupe?
Let's see, there is the 3er, the 3er gt and now the 4er grand coupe which are all pretty much the same car competing for the same buyers. A 2er with 4 dr wouldn't overlap with anything. I dont get it herr Diess!?! |

They don't mind substituting when the customer is spending more, but vice versa is bad for profits. Make sense? Honestly it sounds more like an excuse until they have their competing car rolled out. |

And in daily use I cant think of a more confidence giving car to drive at higher speeds through corners and on wet and/or bad road surfaces... I don't track drive my car and in real life environments these are very good qualities in a powerfull car. Maybe I'm not a real driver then, but I liked it a lot!

Hate to say that but as far as i'm concerned he's pobably right... I would get another 3er before the Merc or Audi as neither of those come with a manual... I think you're dead on though; corp. strategy around when, who and how to anounce new products shall be followed... Every one has to keep their poker face until "D-Day". |

Second thought on price point/profit margin...
Smaller doesn't have to mean cheap.
If you look at the CLA45, load it up with a few options and the MSRP is pretty much head to head with a loaded 335i or an Audi S4. I think there will be a growing demand for smaller high end cars (or maybe that is just whichfull thinking on my part)... BMW will need something to compete on that playing field... Time will tell - I'm in no rush anyway, my e90 still has that new car smell and to me, it is as close as it gets to perfect! |

It is too late for BMW to deliver a F2x-based Gran Coupe.
Because: 1) We would have seen test mules by now. 2) Development for the F20 replacement is surely underway. I expect we will see the F20 replacement mules within 12 months. No need to develop a Gran Coupe version of an about-to-be-outdated platform. It's been almost 5 years since the first F20 was spotted: http://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=267159 |

When was the 2 series released? Hm... I guess it was somewhere in 2014... So, there's at least 3/3,5 years until we'll see the facelift and time to release a 2 series gran coupe (and M2 GC). I think it's the same situation like with the M2 for BMW, they would be just stupid if they don't bring up. |
