I don't believe this.
The 2er coupe is longer and wider than the 1er it replaces - it stands to reason that some might like a 4 door version of the new body style. The new 3/4 have gotten too large for some people - me included. I wouldn't consider one at all. 2er GC though ? Absolutely.

The 2er Gran Coupe would be the GC that actually makes sense since it's not just a prettier version of an existing 4 door sedan.
Also it brings an alternative to those who think the 3er has gotten too big including myself while at the same time crushing the wrong wheel drive competition !! I can't believe BMW doesn't see that |

I think BMW knows they need a 4 door sedan to compete with CLA and A3, they are just being caught wrong footed at this time. It takes time to produce a new car and they will not admit the need to fill that niche until it is almost ready for production.

It is not about a niche model, it is just about a compact sedan under the F30 which is based on the F20. What it this car might be, 1 Series Sedan or 2 Series GranCoupé, it is a compact sedan below the mid-sized sedan (F30). By the time BMW decides to build it, the 1 Series will be replaced, meaning it will be FWD. It will no more be worth investing on old platform. So they will bring a 1/2 Series Sedan/GranCoupé on next generation, but then, nobody will care, as it will be FWD. But being cheaper, many will buy it for the BMW badge. Continuation of brand dilution!

IMO - BMW is diluting the brand with i3, 2 series grand coupe and probably a couple more, is BMW going to turn into Toyota?

From Mr. Diess statements I infer they believe a small sedan would sell, but not be profitable. I suspect this is because the 2-series is a modified 3-series platform, nearly as expensive and heavy as the 3 even though it is smaller inside and out. And since it would have to be sold at a lower price, I guess not profitable? Well BMW needs to make another smaller lighter RWD platform. Then we could see a car of the size and weight or the E36 (or even E30?) again. But I won't hold my breath that we'll see another platform any time soon (in the next 5 years). So okay, it is unrealistic to hope for a smaller/lighter RWD BMW sedan. But BMW, there is a flip side to that coin. Know it is also unrealistic to get all your customers back without one. WTF.
They jam us with the X1 and 3er GT instead of a reasonably priced 328i wagon (the xi/auto only is like outrageously priced, probably because it has a bunch of standard gimmicks) and a slew of other slow selling odd ball models, but won't offer what seems to me to be a no brainer? I've got news for you, in tight American cities where people buy 328s because it fills their image quota, those buyers will go for the less expensive, smaller and therefore easier to drive cla and A3 sedan over the 328. And if BMW does indeed counter with a stylish 2gc, they will be able to maintain that buyer. Didn't they just say last week that the m235i is to attract younger buyers until they can afford an M3? Doesn't makes sense. A 2er gc would definitely sell better than the ATS, cla and A3 ( I only mention the ATS because it's a bit smaller than the current 3er, and a bit less money if optioned cheaply).

BMW's board has got to grow a set of balls and start producing more cars for their core enthusiast drivers. I hate to think where the company might be in ten years time, with the current attitude with letting Audi and MB paving the lead(and taking on the financial risk) with new niche models. I really was hoping for a 2er gc to add to the garage, m2gc would have been awesome.
Keeping the 1er long term at this point. |

I'm glad I bought my 2011 E90 3 series sedan when I did, as I heard that the F30 was growing in size. I like the size of my car and would not want one any larger. I use it as a fair weather daily driver and like having 4 doors, thus I wouldn't be interested in a 228i/M235i 2 door model. If someone runs into my car and I have to replace it, I'm not sure what I would go with. BMW just doesn't sell anything here in the USA that I would buy.
The 2 series GC was an intriguing option that I may have considered, but BMW seems tone deaf to their core buyers who don't want lower/longer/wider.

BMW has moved the 3er up market and they are acutely aware they have to fill the void of their repositioned best seller. |

I was thinking the 228i Gran Coupe would be the perfect replacement for my current 328i in a few years. Hopefully my wish will come true. All three kids will be out of car seats by then, until the government mandates that car seats are required until kids are 16.

I sure hope this guy does NOT know what he is talking about.
f30 is WAY too big for me (currently driving an e46 ZHP sedan). 2er GC would fit the bill perfectly. While the MB is terribly ugly, that Audi looks pretty great.
