BMW 2 Series Ad
Just received my February issue of Car and Driver. BMW has a two page ad for the 2 series on the inside front cover, claiming the 2 series to be the rebirth of the 2002. Looks more like a Honda Accord Coupe to me.

BMW's marketing...lol. They claimed the 1-series was the 2002 reborn as well. The reality is that the 1-series was WAAAAY more influenced by the 2002 than the 2-series is. The 2-series is more like a shrunk 3-series with the same style influences. The 2-series is very uninspiring, design-wise-----which means it will likely appeal to the more generic-preferring masses.

BMW North America actually "just" chose their ad agency in 2011.
It's kind of a shame the "message" hasn't been consistent, but I'd say BMW doesn't really need too much help from advertising to sell cars in the US.

I saw one in person the other day. (Probably the same red one that's been spotted in Northern NJ on other posts.) I liked it very much as I was not a fan of the 1 series "bubble" look, even after 3 years of ownership. I would describe it as understated, but sporty.

I think they are doing the same thing they did with the 3 series, making the 3 series sedan the new 3 series, and the 3 series coupe the new 4 series. Now they have the 1 series is the new 1 series hatch, which i really dislike, and the non hatch bags is the 2 series. IMO I think BMW just wants more numbers added to their inventory lmao.

2 series interior isn't bad, if you like lots of different lines, colors, and stuff to look at. I'm a simple man. Function over form is what I go for.

Personally I LOVE the idea "let's separate the coupe and sedan models by adding even numbers to the the lineup, then we can add gran coupe models to the coupe lineups so we can have 4 door models of EVERYTHING!!!!" and by "love" I mean I'm happy I bought the 1 I did....

The February Car and Driver has a two page 2 Series ad. This is the first that I've seen.

Love that pic of the 2er--looks good.
Not sure why BMW feels the need to compare numerous cars to the 2002--they did it with the E82 incessantly as well...

pretty nice - they need to get a lot of momentum behind this car early so the M2 doesn't over canabalize even more sales.
I think its funny that you can take a $44k base price and build an almost M2 for another estimated $4-$6k (limited slip diff, m performance exhaust, etc.). I'd imagine the M2 price, if built, will start in the $50k range. Just curious how many folks spend $50k on this thing and then bash the M2 when (or if) its released at a starting base. |

This car has a lot in common with the 2002. The 2002 was a vehicle built using a majority of its chassis and motor components from it's larger sedan variant. The M235i is doing the same thing, using a majority of 3 and 435i components, stuffed into a smaller lighter car. The 2002 is what made enthusiasts back in the day, and the M235i is the modern equivalent catering to that market more than any other BMW offering as of now-especially in its price point.
