Probably not slower on the 228 since the manual on the Z4 28 and 328 is actually faster than the 8 speed auto according to BMW. Without the launch control in the M235 it may not be faster.

Whereas in an auto the boost is kept constant while it shifts So theoretically in a manual you have to rebuild boost, which that slight delay causes you to loose some time Don't ask me the technical parts of it because I have no idea! I'm assuming because of the clutch

auto is clearly faster since you dont take your foot of the gas so it holds boost during shifts. but unless you live your life a quarter mile at at time that doesnt matter and the 6MT is way more fun.

So can one of you engineers explain why the manual is faster with a Z4 28 and 328 but a manual is slower with the N55. Obviously the shift point or gearing makes the manual faster with the N20 vs the N55 but I'd like to understand why. I remember the N54 manual used to be faster than the 6 speed auto and I thought it was because the auto shifted into 3rd before 60 but you could hold the manual in second. Just trying to understand why the manual is faster so far with the N20. I'm going by the BMW website numbers.

Again, I know the new ATs are faster...but there is a fundamental piece of the driving experience missing that is achieved through shifting your own gears, at least for me...

The only reason I'm considering this car is the 6MT. Seems like there are so few options in the sub $50k market for those of us that require a manual. I'd consider the S3, but that won't feature a manual so it's out. My other option is the 2015 Golf R, but it doesn't look like that will be coming to the US for quite some time

Agreed 100% and it would be 6MT for me. I have had two DCT cars, and it's just not the same. Faster maybe, less fun for sure.

Faster shifting by the auto doesn't make any difference on the street. Usually you shift before you nail the gas. Third gear will get you arrested on the freeway and second gear will do the same on surface streets.

Exactly, I really don't care what is faster. Sometimes I'm slow with shifting manuals--so slow that a corolla will beat me off the line while I am driving my dad's 911. If I need to shift really fast to show him/her who's boss, I suppose I could (and sometimes I do when a Prius inevitably decides it wants a "race", race in quotations because of how laughable that idea is--why do they all seem to want to race anyway?)--but I don't care! It just feels SO good to be shifting the car myself either way. People care too much about numbers, and it's making cars way more boring. |
