Fake Engine Noise (Active Sound Design)?
Will the M235i have the BMW fake engine noise piped through the speakers?
While it won't stop me getting the car, it will be pretty damn lame if it has it. |

And yes it's lame, but I've read in other forum that some people found a way to deactivate it without disabling the sound system. The thread has been deleted and I don't know why, but there is a way to do it. |

If simple to do, I would try to disable.

It is really a shame about the Active Sound for this car. I don't understand how it is so isolated from the engine bay. It's a small car. It's not a 5-series. Still like it. Hope they get rid of it. |

I'll deactivate it because for me it's ridicilous, the 1M with twin-turbo-engine sounds very good, not as good as a NA engine but I definetly like it more than this fake organ sound. |

source?? Pretty sure the M135i has active sound, and the video seems to sound like it has it.
Although I would like to be wrong

I hate things that are fake. Piping in faux mechanical sounds is wrong. BMW made it's name building wonderful driving machines and since 1975 I have owned (or leased) a dozen of them. They have been the smallest available/manual gear boxes/highest mechanical spec - pure fun in a world of bloated mediocrity.
I see a trend with BMW towards bigger, heavier, and now fake it if it isn't right. What next faux leather smell piped through the vents and seats that tip opposite the turns to make it "feel" like it is cornering harder. Come on BMW, get back to your roots.

This is just icing on the cake... With the bitter disappointment that the M2 is turning out to be, I also will not be buying any new BMW until they have the option to remove or disable Active Sound (without disabling your whole sound system). If I want to hear the engine, I'll roll the damn window down. I do not ever want anything fake on my car. I don't care if it's the real engine being amplified electronically, I think it's stupid and fake and lame. And (when they mention it at all) acting like it's a "feature", uugh...
People don't like fake. Big time fail BMW.

It appears BMW is trending towards the efficiency of its engines so much so that even SOUND is a form of LOST energy. There is a cost to create an enticing engine note (resonators, etc), but the direction is towards these diesel sounding turbo-blocks, which is NOT the typical sounds we expect from BMW. They will continue to move towards reducing ALL engine energy waste. My larger question is: at what point does adding these "faux features" impact the brand negativly to which the brand is no longer represented by its real traits, but enhancements to "remember" its legacy?

I test drove a Focus RS last year. While it was in many ways a brilliant car, you could definitely notice the "sound symposer". IMHO it made the car feel cheaper than it should feel. I guess we'll just have to see how BMW does it and judge then.
