First and last 2 with a stick?
Hey there. So I want the 2 series to be my first new BMW as a replacement for my E46 330. I always drive stick because it is so much more fun than any auto for me.
But from what I see in the spec sheets the admittedly brilliant auto (tried the F30's version) is: More fuel efficient Better accelerating Lighter And the default transmission. This has made me really worry that this generation is the last stick shift generation, at least in the US. What do you think? |

It's not lighter. That was a typo in the conversion from kg to lbs.
But yes it is faster and more efficient

Order the 6MT. It will be FAR more fun to drive and it will probably hold it's value better than the DCT since very few sticks will make it across the pond.

I personally believe BMW will always continue to offer manuals in smaller engine configurations, but may eliminate that choice in bigger engines and higher up model designations. But yes, I would guess you will see a lot less options for manuals as years go by (or maybe manual will be an a la carte option) and autos will become standard. |

I think they will keep it in the 2 for at least one more generation - the MT take rate on the 135is coupe was over 40%, that bodes well for continued availability.
Although the ZF8A is an amazing transmission, I would have preferred to see the DCT in the F22 due to it's more sporty shift action. The 8 is definitely more smooth and would appeal more to the masses, and has better fuel economy so no surprise they chose it as the standard offering. Not so sure on the next 3 and 4 series, the F3x may be the end of the MT offering unless the take rate picks up soon. I've yet to see an MT6 car on a dealer lot (328 or 335) |

Absolutely! I'm glad at least that the weight was a typo, but precisely because of this it seems that a custom order will be the way to go with us stick drivers.

+10000. How many times do you hear manual owners EVER say "i regret this". I don't think I ever have. Unless somebody sits in traffic really often.

I've owned 15 BMW's and every car was a manual except a 1997 528 auto which I regretted about a week after buying it. The auto may be quicker but it's the fun to drive factor that an auto just doesn't have. I have a X1 28 with the 8 speed and its great but just never as fun as running through the gears with a clutch and stick. I'm ordering another manual 228 and I'm 60 so your never too old. I also despise the fact that BMW's keep getting bigger and heavier, the 228 reminds me of my E46's and my E36's. My 1995 325 and 1996 328 weren't the fastest cars but they were a blast to drive.

I couldn't find an MT when I was looking at new coupes earlier this year so ended up going with a low mile 11 E90 M3 so I could get the MT and the color I wanted. I did find one that the dealer had marked up $13,000?!?! No thank you. I know I would have regretted dct. AT is great for the X1 and X5 but not in the car I want to enjoy driving. Who knows I may hate the pdk in the GT3 and end up getting the prior version to get an MT. Odds are I'll have to find a privately owned one to drive as there won't be any in stock to try out. M2 with MT as a dd is pretty appealing when and if my M3 gets unreliable...

I agree. It's all about the experience. Split second differences in 0-60 times really doesn't matter unless you're racing the thing every weekend. I also agree that BMW has been getting too big and heavy. The new 2 series, other than the 1M and 135, is the first car I've seriously contemplated giving up my E46 for. Still don't think I could ever get rid of it though. At this point it isn't worth much anyway. |
