So let's talk about this ... is the M235i a proper M car?
Or just hype ... Do you consider it a true M car? If so, then why? Or why not?
At what point does the transition to an M car happen? Obviously M Sport models are not ///M cars, but this here is different. The M235i is unique in that regards. |

Honestly I don't even care if it is or isn't.
It fits my price point, and it's going to be super fun to drive. That's what matters to me!

Lol why is this so hard !!
BMW is offering 3 levels of performance to emulate Audi 228 = Audi A3 M235 = Audi S3 M2 = Audi RS3 No it's not a full on M car, it's a halfway M car especially if you add the M performance parts (LSD, suspension and brakes) then it really starts to approach full M level... Only things missing for full on M at that point would be: 1) bespoke motor 2) fender flaring 3) torque vectoring LSD 4) wider rubber 5) better cooling 6) DCT option 7) quad exhaust This is assuming the m perf brakes and m perf suspension are to the level of full M cars in terms of performance But then again, who gives a crap? I like it so I will buy one .. |

Oy.
No. It's an in betweener but it is not an M2. It is an M "Performance" car which does not make it an M "Motorsports" car. Loaded up with all the goodies I would bet the M235i is around $55k. The M2 when it comes out (being hopeful) will likely be more toward $65k and will undoubtedly be significantly faster and durable on track. As someone said before, the M235i is like an S3 while the M2 would be like an RS3. EDIT: ha got beaten to it. |

And the philosophy is that it drives like one. Because they are all around the place (even the "true" ones). 4 cylinders, stock or special engines, I6, V8, they had it all. An M car is one that drives like it should (and yes, some of the past M branded things have not been true to the badge, we cannot say yet of the M235, it has potential to fulfill).

This car should be called "235IS"

So what defines an M car then? Price? Performance? Badging? Comparing it against the competition (Audi seems to be obvious)? Are we waiting for a member of the press to drive it and tells us whether or not its a true M car?
If BMW puts an M badge on it, are we to believe them? |

300-320hp seems to be the norm for sports cars....350+hp will be M car, there will be more aggressive styling (quad exhaust, wider fenders....etc)
BMW is just changing their marketing....these arent real M cars, you just get some of the M products

I am not a fan of using the "M" designation for any car that is not a true M. Having said that I love the M235i and as conflicted as I will be doing so I will be buying one. BMW has followed Audi by using its performance branding of very special and expensive cars to help differentiate its lineup. I suspect I will remove the M badges on mine and save that designation for when I can afford an M4

I think the Ms on the front fenders gotta go for sure - I'm interested to see this in person too - that will help determine how offensive the badges are.

Ive said this many times its not a true M car. Audi has their S line(example TTS) and Audi has their RS Line(TT RS). BMW is moving towards this instead of "M Package" its now M Performance.

The M235i looks like it will be incredible but if you think it even *could* be an M2, you're showing you've never experienced an M. I'm out. |

So let's say you pick all the M bits, perf brakes, suspension and LSD.
Then what's the difference between a M235 and a 1M? (which is the closest comparison) 30 hp... wider fenders and an M button on the steering don't look like a lot of difference to me to say remove all M badges from the car |
