I series XL? I think the people at Auto Express are mistaken. 1 Series is FWD and 2 series is RWD. Or at least that is what we have been lead to believe.

FWD so I guess we won't see any straight 6 under the hood? I think BMW we be shooting themself into the foot the only competition for this kind of thing will be the 500L 7 seater, the Chevrolet orlando, the Mazda 5 or maybe the Volkswagen Golf MK7 Wagon. All of these car will be much cheaper to buy. To gain point there BMW will need to aim for a highline Golf wagon price and get this thing well equiped. Unless they bring it below 320i pricing it doesn't make sense to me.

The latest BMW Active Tourer renders are showcased within the Autobild magazine this week.
The render shows the 7 Seat Active Tourer L for extended wheel base which will be able to accommodate 7 passengers. Since BMW introduced the Active Tourer Concept at Paris 2012 over 100,000 people have registered their interest by signing up to learn about the upcoming car. This is significant as crossovers , mpvs and SUVs have again increased their market share over last year. This segment is also highly profitable and will be for BMW. The cars main rival the Mercedes-Benz B-Klasse has shown that a premium market for this segment exists having sold over 100,000 units since its launch in 2011. The car will be available in a conventional 5dr , 5 seater and in 7 Seat Extended wheelbase. Its biggest significance will be its debut of the First FWD BMW which allows for exceptional interior space. As a first the Active Tourer will be imported to North America where potential it can become the second BMW for a customer that already has a BMW but has extra family requirements that cannot be fulfilled by their BMW and have either a domestic or import MPV or Minivan as a weekend back-up. A new Concept of the Active Tourer and further illustration of BMWs expanding compact portfolio will be unveiled on July 12.

There is potential for this concept not only in Europe but also in North America. You could have a main BMW as the daily driver but your partner could have a Honda , Nissan or Toyota minivan for the family days etc. would the Active Gran Tourer not appeal to customers that have this routine? I am sure that some in that position will say that is my ideal car because it fulfils my daily needs and it is a BMW.

I used to trust BMW to make fairly austere, rwd sedans that were fun to drive, had good feedback and just went about things in a direct manner. I never cared if they had crap cup holders and under powered air conditioning. They were fun to drive. I know that staying independent is a bear, but I sure wish it didn't involve dragging themselves into every corner of the market. Is a panel van next? Maybe a food truck? I'm sure those moving stairs for airplanes are probably a growth market, maybe the next i-product can be a moving flight of stairs! |

Why does GM suck? Because they try to be good at everything. I agree--stick with what got you here, right? It's like watching a sports team that all of the sudden starts trying new shit in the playoffs because that's what they think they're supposed to do...instead of just using the formula that worked in the first place. BMW should not want to be Toyota. Let other companies sell the damn minivans...
