Well, I have to go bigger. X1 opinions.
My wife and son seem to be cramped in the e90 now after only a year of ownership. Fml. So I've been looking around at other vehicles, 535, GLA45, but the 535 is still too small in the back and the GLA45 I just can't seem to get a good price on it so I'm thinking it's out the window.
So I'm looking at the x1 35i. It seems to tick all the boxes not really an SUV, potentially fun , plus I can transfer my jb4 to it . What do you guys with the 35i think, I'm looking at 2013/2014. |

it's way too small, had both the old and new loaners. Actually, a X3 is tiny if you use a honda cr-v as a benchmark. I would never ever get a cr-v, but just pointing out how diminutive the X1 is, and even the X3....if I'm not mistaken a GTI has more cargo space.

Go f48 generation, 2016, which is completely redesigned. Previous generation is awful looking imo.
My sister picked up a 16 x28i, pretty sporty, plenty of room compared to my e90. Has a few quirks that I didn't like, but all in all, not bad.

E90 is a 4 +1 car. You guys should be fine as of right now..... My car comfortably holds 4 people for long road trips. 5 is okay for short trips around the city

I also moved out of my E90 within months of my daughter being born. The back seat just didn't cut it with the massive car seat back there.
So, I went with a Subaru Outback 3.6R Limited. Tons of space, top safety pick, amazing resale value, highly reliable, plus I love wagons (even with 8.7 inches of ground clearance). The CVT is actually pretty decent, the MPGs are slightly better than the E90, has heated reclining rear seats and adaptive cruise. It's not quite as quick as the E90 was, but it's accelerationi isn't horrible either; that is why I have other vehicles, for that sort of thing. Worth a look. The X3 is a very well-built car. Spring for that if you can.

One of the issues is that the E9x simply drives very well compared to any 2016 vehicle. Almost all of them have electric power steering. Short of a Porsche, eps imho falls very short of the steering that the E9x has. Since E9x's are relatively older now, I would say keep it, and get a new car, but make sure you actually look at the space. A Honda CR-V which again I would never ever consider, has more room than a X5. So if it's room that you truly need, BMW would fall pretty short.

I had one as a loaner, it was a POS m really hated the acceleration on it. The car felt so slow below 3 rpm , like really slow , it was not until 4000 rpm the car somewhat pick up speed, the engine sound was horrible. I think it was a 8 speed automatic so the car loved staying below 3000 rpm which made my drive horrible. I believe it was the 4 cylinder turbocharge.
I much rather drive a mini van |

The X1 is not that much bigger inside than an E90. Drives like crap based on a loaner I had once. If you want to stay German a MB E series wagon might do the trick. Lots of interior and cargo room, AWD and all without the high centre of gravity in an SUV. It's not a spirited driver but it has some good power. A CPO'd used one can be found for about the price of a new X1.

I've owned several SUV's. The "roominess" is mostly an illusion unless you get a Ford Expedition or Suburban. For a long haul, like 2000 miles, my F10 is as roomy and comfortable for a family of four as an Acura MDX. It's also nice to stow all the luggage away in the trunk and keep the interior clutter free. SUV's are overrated IMHO. A sedan is also much less tiring to drive over a long distance compared to a top heavy wind blown SUV.

I don't need much more room, I have a small family and don't need a big SUV, not only that, I don't want an SUV, I want a car. So this is a good in between error.
Although I did think the interior was bigger, I'll have to research that a bit more. |

the old x1 is built on the e90 chassis. it literally is the same dimensions inside as the e90. the new x1 has PLENTY of room. it is a fwd platform with awd and it isn't as fun as the old x1, but it is a family car so does it really matter? it is a very nice car and it is definitely the best in its segment. go drive one.
