M235i obviously better. But better = cost more.
I recently started to use my M235i for daily driving to work in heavy traffic. Believe me, I wish I had a 228i in this situation. The fuel consumption is M235i is way higher than 228i. |

What is the "obvious betterness" of the 235?

Not "better". Bigger.

We often see blurring between what one person likes and their pronouncement of what is "better". Makes perfect sense to them. Other preferences must be misinformed. Those who believe more of what they like is always objectively better actually become easy to predict.

I like bigger motors, therefore all other options being equal M235i is better. After pricing out and equalizing the options and equipment between 228i and M235i, I see that the M235i gives me 33% more powah for 9.5% more $$$. To me, that's a no-brainer.

Gentlemen, let's not let this thread devolve into a pointless exercise in Neanderthal chest-beating and Home Improvement grunts. "Better" can be defined in as many ways as there are posters in this thread.
For comparison's sake: a 400hp car with the suspension and tires of a Buick (or, for that matter, almost any vintage American 'muscle car') won't have anything on a 200hp car with the suspension and tires of, say, a Lotus. So blanket statements about power only border on hogwash. It's how the package fits for an individual's needs. Period.

I would say, if you can't tell the difference on a test drive, get the 228i. From what I have gathered from the internets, the m235i would get you the 6cyl and maybe a little better steering and suspension tuning, but is a little more nose heavy. For a daily, it probably doesn't matter, for the track, it may change the characteristics.

The 228 is a good car but the 235 has a lot more torque, this will only get worse with the 230 vs 240, the 240 has 111 ft lb more than the 230 and over a longer range, that and around 90 hp more, I've driven a 228 and hardly noticed the difference in weight, but I did notice the lower torque a lot, I'd be happy with either but given the choice I'd always buy the M235/240, it just has more going for it for not a lot more money, and I was only getting 3mpg more out of the 228

I sat on the very same fence, ultimately I went for the M235i. But then of course there are many driving factors that made my decision and they may vary from yours. I'm 35 and I have been driving a fuel efficient Honda for the bulk of my life - don't get me wrong they're great cars but I would really like to have "The Ultimate Driving Experience" and by ultimate, is go with something that's gonna give you some huff when you want it!
In the end of the day you do end up paying more in the long run with the M235i, less fuel efficient and bigger brakes, staggered rubbers & wheels, and in my case I need to purchase snows for winter. If those costs are factored in your purchase then I am ultimately M235i > 228i

Its funny how Lexus launched its performance quick shift 8-speed automatic back in 2008 and 99.9% of BMW owners shit all over it....garbage, too many gears, BMW for manual or DCT ! and now with 2-series all of a sudden 8-speed automatic is amazing lol. Same with engines.....BMW straight 6 or nothing, V6 garbage, i4 garbage that belongs in Honda....N54/55 turbo garbage, NA i6 is the best. Now you got turboed 4 cylinder banger
PS. Lexus automatic tranny shift time is 100ms and BMW claims 200ms on its 8-speed. Last edited by Kolyan2k; 05-28-2016 at 10:32 AM.. |

That Buick thing is a bad comparison. 228i and M325i can be spec'd to be pretty much equal in all but the motor. It all comes down to what people think is a better value to them. 228i gives you better mileage and is sufficient for people who are OK with less torque. I switched from a e46 330i and the 228i gives little to no difference in power so I don't think I'd be satisfied with the 228i. When I priced out 228i vs M235i I found I can get 33% more power for 9.5% more $$$, I find the M235i to be the better value.

For me, it was like ordering guac at chipotle. Is it worth $3 to get guac on my bowl? Probably not, but it's just $3 to get exactly what I want.

This is the best method for making a choice. The M235 definitely has more grunt,if you need it. I could get in big trouble with my 228i if I tried, though.

I never tested the 235. I got behind the wheel of a 228 AT with two passengers on board, hopped on the on-ramp, and was doing 80 without "trying" when the salesman pointed out the police car on the shoulder. Done. I was getting 18 mpg in my 2009 X3 with the 3-liter inline six with mixed driving, so my 25 mpg now is fantastic, and this little i4 is brilliant, IMO.
