Michelin CrossClimate tires
Yesterday I blew out both driver's side tires going through a typical PHL pothole filled with water at trolley tracks at 8-10 mph in slow traffic. I immediately drove to the local dealer. Their estimate for two more crappy Pirellis was around $600. I declined after looking at Tire Rack's Michelin choices, which were Pilot Sport A/S 4 or The CrossClimate+.
Anyone have experience replacing the OE run-flats with either of these Michelins? My prior experiences with Pirellis has never been good. Yesterday's two sidewall blowouts makes a total of 5 Pirelli failures for me in three cars. |

The CrossClimate+ will be little better than driving around with winter tyres on year round, they are not a good match to anything with any sporting inclination, more suited to SUVs and taxis.
They get great reviews form Honda Accord, Subaru Forrester, Toyota Prius and Camry owners on Tirerack, but I didn't see many reviews from BMW drivers. Last edited by aerobod; 10-23-2020 at 10:38 AM.. |

Crossclimate is an all weather type tire. AS3 is standard all season. You should first answer what kind of tire you need. If you want an all weather tire, you can't beat nokian WRG4.

That's been our experience. We bought WRGs from Carson City Tire in Amherst, NH when we lived up there; Steve (the owner) priced Nokians very aggressively. Now we get them out of Michigan.

I'm with @aerobod in terms of thinking that all-seasons are not the best choice for a performance model. On a 218d or 220d, perhaps, but not a 230i or the M-Lites where for me, you'd be losing so much in summer handling that it defeats the point.
I do have Michelin CrossClimates on my 75BHP Peugeot 206 1.4L local run-around, but not on the M235i. they've been excellent and a good compromise vs the other combinations I've tried on the 206 of summers all year, winters all year, and separate summers and winters. European 2 Series owners are generally perplexed by the choice of the Pirellis for the US market as OE on the 2 Series. The P7 is just the wrong choice and the PZero is really aimed at heavier performance models.

I've run the Pilot Sport A/S 4 for about 2k miles now, came from OE Cinturato P7 RF. I'm quite happy with the switch: the Michelins are miles more comfortable, quiter, and capable.
Feedback and athleticism are great, I've had experience with PS4s as well and was more than happy to sacrifice a small amount of performance for road manners (I've noticed additional damping) and less noise. I chose all seasons over summers as I need to commute on freezing/wet mornings; while I enjoy occasional spirited back-road drives, most of my miles are GT.

I have about 10k or more on my AS4’s. I love them on the car. I have summer only also, but was lazy this year and kept them on. I don’t drive the 2 in the snow, so can’t comment on that, but everything else has been great. I also drive 422 everyday for work and no issues. I’m sure I would have blown out the run flats multiple times over by now.

If I might ask, where in the Bay Area are you living that you might need to commute on freezing mornings?

Santa Cruz mountains...typically Dec-Feb the mornings are high 30s to freezing. The past few years have seen minor snowfall nearby too, it melts quickly but also catches my fellow motorists unawares...

I've had the Michelin CrossClimates on my 230i XDrive for 3 weeks. Fuel consumption went up 15%, handling much worse than OE RFT Pirellis and definitely too noisy ( hum below 20-25mph). Tire Rack is replacing them with Michelin Pilot Sport AS4 on Tuesday. Although highly rated by Consumers' Reports, my experience with the CrossClimates was the first time I've been disappointed by a Michelin product.

Had the CrossClimates replaced today with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4s under Michelin's 60 day satisfaction guarantee. Instant improvement in fuel consumption, much quieter and better handling. Goodbye CrossClimates!
