Run Flat VS Non-run flat?
Greetings all!
Just curious if anyone has made the switch in their m240 from run-flats to non-fun flats? Does the ride quality and comfort really improve drastically? Is it noticeable? Thanks! |

I went from P7 run flats for Firehawk Indy 500s on my M240i.
Night and day difference in terms of grip. However the right quality only improved a little bit. Still worth it though. |

This question has been beaten to death so many times, and yet it keeps coming back.
For reference, you can only get run-flat tires for a Bugatti, that's the only kind that fits. A set will run you about the price of a new 230, if you can find them. |

Do you mind expanding on that Bugatti comment. It makes no sense to me.

What negative language? Not liking an answer isn't a negative with the exception of the personal interpretation of the sentence. I read it and find it constructive to inducing a more serious effort to finding one's own answers to questions before they're asked. I never have asked a question I didn't already have a formulated answer for in my mind.
So consider it a positive, because it is. Have a nice day Lol |

I will expand: there are a lot of RFT haters out there. If the most expensive car in the world can only be had with RFTs, then maybe they are not quite so awful.
Personally, I am beyond changing flats. Did it for more years than I can count. It's worth it to me not to have the hassle, especially on my Bugatti. |

Changed the 225/40r18 RF P7 all seasons
to Michelin PS4S (NRF- same size) with a big improvement in both performance and ride, and got 215/50/17 Michelin x-ice xi3 (NRF) + 17x7.5 wheels for a significant improvement in winter weather performance. Win-win x 2. |

I can't believe they came on a M240i. The 230i without MSport or THP I understand. I remember them on my E90 and they did leave much to be desired.

Shouldn't they be called "drive flats" not run flats. I just have to hit the start button for it to run, but the functionality is only important while driving.

Having neither legs nor a motor, they should not be run flat nor drive flat. Most accurately, they should be "roll flat".

I have done it on our Mini Cooper (for unsprung weight benefits only) as I don't track nor AutoX my cars. I like nimble performance so dropping unsprung weight helps and also adds WHP and TQ (due to less rolling resistance -which was why I actually did it).
I left the runflats on the BMW as performance is more than I can safely use on the streets. The car rides nice IMO (I did notice a marginal improvement with the MINI going to non RF's, but not substantial enough IMO to actually spend the money for a new set of tires and the mounting). RF's will provide better durably and longer life that softer compound tires. Additionally if you pick up a nail, you can drive to a service station/home/dealership rather than having to get out, use the emergency repair kit of wait for AAA. If you track the car, or compete with it, or desire the best possible cornering performance and are willing to suffer shorter tire life, the swap to non-run-flats. |

Unfortunately, over in the US, you often seem to get Pirelli P7 Runflats as the ex-factory tyres. Frankly, P7s really aren't the right tyre for this model - they're never fitted to UK/Euro modes, as far as I know. So it's no surprise if you swap P7s for, well, any other performance Michelin/Bridgestone/etc. that you see an improvement. So it's hard to separate how much any improvement is down to changing the brand vs changing to non-runflats. Not saying there's no benefit, but you might be 80% as happy with another runflat brand.
I appreciate that this is a tricky one to decide on, because this isn't like changing the tyre on your MTB, given the cost.

Put regular tires on the wife's 130 and she didn't notice the difference except when I told her she was bothered about the safety aspect. She demands (and will get ) RFTs on her 230 when it's ready. I don't push cars heavily in corners any more and couldn't tell the difference between the two tire types.

This is taking the place of the traditional 'what weight of oil to use'. Nobody mentioned it (this time) so I'll throw in that the RFT's are widely rumored to be much more prone to blowouts and blistering, as well as 'cupping' wear patterns. IF they get a nail or similar, then you get the 'run flat' benefit, but if they blow out half the sidewall you are SOL - This lead me to think they may be a net negative for roadside issues, since I'm more likely to hit potholes than nails. Plus they just suck - the only reason the Bugatti comes with them is that they couldn't get it safety certified w/o tires that could survive long enough to safely come to a stop from 300mph, and by the time you engineer a tire carcass that can handle that speed it is almost a RFT anyway. I had the performance summer Conti RFT's that cupped so badly I couldn't stand it, under 8k miles IIRC; I'm so much happier with non-RFTs (Contis, now Bridestone 007's).
And if you think the term 'stupid question' is too harsh and negative then this is the wrong forum. Which reminds me, what IS the best winter tire for snowflakes? |
