wifi enablement

Hi folks - wish I'd seen this thread earlier as may have saved me some headache and money! :-(
I have a UK X1 with the entrynav2 head unit (6.5" touchscreen) and based on other threads from other forums I went ahead and had it coded with the 143 code for carplay (FSC obtained a legit code from BMW for my WIN), as everything seemed to point at this working fine, and that even without a wifi antenna installed it would work when the phone was in close proximity.
I've now found out though, that as per this thread, I've got a Magneti Marelli EE0002 head unit which has a blanking plate where the wifi connector should be, so the carplay fails to activate / connect :-(

Wondering if anyone knows a way out of this potentially? Is the wifi enabled head unit a totally different variant / mfg part, or is it possible to add wifi to the EE0002 unit in any fashion? I'm not sure whether it's completely missing the wifi circuitry or just the port connector which could be soldered on, since a lot of doc's when searching online do seem to refer to this magneti unit having wifi capability.
Would a swap of headunit to one enabled with wifi (e.g. from a breakers yard), if I could identify which model this had to be, be possible, whilst retaining the 143 FSC code I've now spent out for, or would this need other potentially extensive re-coding, for the car to accept a different head unit, or maybe even need a new 143 code?
I'm not sure what's tied to what, in terms of e.g. Headunit <> VIN <> 143 CP FSC?

Appreciate any info folks may have and any ideas for any way forwards with this...
Thanks
Jonathan

Hi Sir

So, your question is you activated the Carplay but can't connected with your iphone ?

Try to delete bluetooth connection and re-connect carplay again.

Yes, if the PCB for the WLAN is not there it will fail on the CD Deploy. You can still replace your ENTRYNAV2 unit with one that has the WLAN port but the donor car would have to be OLDER than yours.

Once you have that, you'll need someone who can grab the repair kit for your VIN from BMW and program the replacement head unit with your VIN and original FSC codes along with the 143 FSC.

If you need help with that, let me know.

So, for anyone wanting to know how to tackle this in the UK/Europe.

Firstly - it's possible and i've done it. Screen shot shows my 2018 F48 X1 with BMW Carplay.

1. From what I can see the "standard" X1 F48 2018 (and likely 2019 from what i've read) does not have the right electronics as above for Carplay, so you need to swap it if you want "native" BMW carplay.

2. The trick to check (I've not heard of any way to do this in software/by VIN as of now) is - Does it have a Wifi logo on the top lid (mine didn't) or does it have the connector referenced on this thread (likely not - more likely a blanking plate) and just a Bluetooth logo?

3. Locate a new head unit that has WiFi/Bluetooth. I got lucky with ebay adverts showing a "Carplay enabled" head-unit and then found the part number on the lid. It's 8705960. Mine was advertised as from a 1 Series / F20 - and from what I've understood they are compatible across a number of BMW's. I paid just over £110 for mine and the time of writing can see 2 more for similar money on ebay.co.uk and others (more £) in Europe.

This is the complex part though - in effect you'll need either:
a) someone who knows how to "virginize" the new head unit, to remove the specific BMW codes for device specific codes (Sat Nav) - and I didn't find anyone. I think right now this may not even be possible.
b) A head unit hat has these codes (FSC) codes that are older than the car you have. The coder will in effect be "pulling" off your original codes and putting them back on the new head unit. Whilst this doesn't take a huge amount of time (20-30 mins it seems) - it won't work if the codes on the "new" unit are more recent than your original codes, as they'll get overwritten (or similar logic - I'm no expert).

So - I got lucky and the breaker's yard told me the VIN - I sent my contacts this and also checked the various VIN online tools to find the build date of that vehicle. It was months before my card was build. The pros/coders can check the actual create date of the specific codes to be sure - so a useful check. It was confirmed I was lucky - my car was a clear months more recent :-)

4. The physical head unit swap is quite straight forward (some of the connectors are a little tricky to get off but they're doable with patience). I got a £3 angled "dentist mirror" which helped be see the back of the unit/the connectors as the cabling was very tight on mine - so not much slack to pull out.

5. The new head unit should boot up and work for "basics" - in my case really just FM and AM (ie no Nav, No DAB etc). This means you can setup this up without having to have the coder there and then.

6. You'll then need the BMW CarPlay FSC code for the VIN of your car. - which comes from BMW and a number of people in the UK/USA sell these. They are not cheap - pricing seems to vary but its around £350-£450 from what I've seen, so pricey.

You'll need help from the coder (physically there with their kit or remotely - via a £15 cable and a laptop with wifi/internet)

7. The code needs to be applied and the menu codes to provide the Carplay option in the menu. I'd say this is a highly specialist gig - esp when changing a head unit - as the unit needs to be coded to the car, options added, DAB enabled, Sat Nav re-enabled. Speech rec re-enabled. This is where the dates of the codes matter - as per above.

6. I was up and running in less than an hour, I imagine as the coder contact I was introduced to is a real pro, he's done several Carplay installs - although to be fair this one was his first head unit swap, so it was a little nervy, whilst also being a bit of a challenge :-)

Oh, and you'll really need a wifi aerial. These are around £6 on ebay / £8 on amazon and without one the whole thing is much more painful. They just plug into the head unit and can rest on the head unit fine.

Hope that helps at least someone else..
Any queries, let me know.

Good luck!

No - that is not the question.. this is about a head unit that doesn't have the necessary hardware to use Carplay..

On a UK/European car - you can check the lid of the radio (which you can see just about without removing the radio or even pulling it out) and see if you see a WiFi logo. Mine only had a Bluetooth logo..

Hope that helps someone at least..

OK, i know your question. But it's impossible

You can see attached files for more detail.

There are two different hardware RF wifi/bt chips.

Hi - thanks for the info and the internal pictures - id wondered whether it was just a case of the two units being broadly the same but maybe the Wi-fi physical connector having not been installed on the Bluetooth only unit (due to eg regs / licence approvals etc) but your pictures confirm the two units actually have a very different build internally and that this isn’t the case.

I therefore followed niche on this group and with the excellent help of Steve from this thread I purchased a cheap second hand Wi-fi enabled unit (same bmw part no. Referenced above) and had Steve remotely recode it. All works as expected now and CarPlay fully functioning so would recommend this to anyone facing issues in the eu due to this problem - the trim removal and head unit swap out is very easy on the f48 so not something to worry about - I installed the Wi-fi aerial at the same time on others advice and stuck it to the top of the new head unit - only £6 off eBay and solves any reception issues.

So - thanks for the help of everyone on this - really glad I persevered with it and now have it working!

Hi Steve

I have a S606A ENAVEVO head unit Model Alpine EE0001 is that HU_EntryNav2 (showing tiles)NBT Evo ID6 Business Nav.
I've retrofitted a larger 8.8in touch screen and also plugged in a wifi antenna on the back of my HU.

Trying hard to get the CarPlay option. BMW connected drive are about as much help as a choclate tea pot.
I know I need FSC 143 and I also need to know what coding I have to do in the HU to enable it to run as well to get it to recognise the wifi antenna.
Anyway you can help me with this?

TIA

If you have ENTRYNAV2 with WLAN Port, then CarPlay is possible.

As I understand. Have even seen members here with the same set up state they have CP working flawlessly however I seem to be still hitting my head against a brick wall and going around in ever decreasing circles.

To date even though I have done all the VO and FDL coding (6CP) + (6NS) required in preparation for CP I have been told by various people on this forum :-

1) BMW AG have stopped selling OEM FSC143 a few months ago
2) I cannot have non oem fsc on my head at all with I step F020-18-530 even if I were to have all the FSC's changed to none oem.
3) Connected drive store and BMW customer support don't want anything to do with it and will not sell me FSC codes or provision for CarPlay
4) MMI solutions are not compatible with my head (according to Bimmertech)
5) The alternstive of miracast using an android phone is not possible with HU_EntryNav2 NBT Evo ID6 Business Nav
6) The only option is to spend $500 which I don't have, to pay someone on the forums to "fix" this when others are getting it sorted for $70- $200

Really should it be this difficult ?

OEM 143 FSC Code can easily be obtained.

Hi!
X1 F48 sep 2017 (OEM CarPlay installed).
Is it possible to retrofit 8.8" touch CID? No navigation, 6.5" non-touch, entrynav2 (basic media2).

From what people have stated, no... from what I have read before upgrading to the 8.8 myself, was the HU doesn't doesn't support the functionality. Perhaps the newer models do?

Hi guys, found this thread fascinating. Always thought CarPlay was something only available on Evo id5/6.

I currently have a 2014 f30 with hu_entrynav. Wondering if anyone could give me advice?

Would it be as simple as buying 8705960 (entry nav2 unit) and an emulator harness?

I know my current 8.8 screen isn't compatible with id6 because of a voltage issue?! Does anyone know anything about re entrynav2?

Cheers for any help.

Check with shawnsheridan

We were able to obtain these codes up until early this year but it looks like BMW has now requires the nav FSCs for Entrynav to be ordered concurrently with the 143 FSC which drives the cost way up.

I believe Shawn may have a workaround.

No workaround. If car has no factory Navigation, both Nav and CarPlay FSC Codes must be ordered.
