FWD or RWD for next gen 2 Series under deliberation at BMW
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Full decision on the next 2 Series is not final yet (full decision will be taken by the end of the year) and can use the UKL chassis but can adapted for RWD. (BMW M are fighting for RWD because the M2 is apparently even more outstanding than the 1er M Coupe). What the strategy aims to show is a split between the 1er and 2er, but vehicles that cannot compromise on space and versatility will be addressed via FWD namely the 1er , X1 , X2 and Active/Gran Tourers. THIS is the 1er Sedan but the strategy involves a 2er Gran Coupe. So that compact entry lines will mirror the upper segments in the BMW portfolio. The G chassis or 35Up (more info on 35Up platform) is too expensive to use for smaller compact cars and therefore starts with the 3er or in the case of the first entry model the G01 X3.

If these photos are of what would be badged as a 2 series gran coupe for North America ( which is my own personal opinion) then BMW will finally be addressing a segment of the market that they vacated ever since the E36 halted production. If it is flexible enough in design to still be used as a 1 series FWD chassis for other markets or for orther MINI vehicles then so be it.. there indeed will be a lot of economy of scale. Missing out on the opportunity to bring a 2 series gran coupe (AKA E36 sized 4 door sedan) to the north american market would be an error BMW will sorely regret in the future. More small cars are still needed here.... and with all the models movig up in size... every auto manufacturer except for BMW has figured out how to bring smaller vehicles in to the US market. The civic, corolla, altima, have moved up and smaller models came in below. Audi is bringing over A3.. Merc has CLA... etc etc... From your comments, " This is the 1er Sedan but the strategy involves a 2er Gran Coupe. " and that there are plans for an X1 X-Sport (extended X1) indicate to me that this platform should be able support both of those models. |

The 2 gran coupe also sounds very welcome. Now all we need to know is what and when is BMW's answer to the 911 Turbo S and McLaren 650S coming? |

If they were to do a fwd 2 gc or 1 sedan than i would buy an audi a3 in a heartbeat rather than a car that i cant even proudly say i got a bimmer. What is the point of a bmw if its not rwd? It isnt particularly beautiful nor its interior is the best or it isnt the most luxorious. It is just ridiculous. Stop acting stupid bmw or you'll lose most of your enthusiasts

I thought it was already decided, go forward anything under a 3-series will be fwd. Sharing same chassis with mini's.
This will let everyone know once and for all where BMW currently stands. M division fighting with the bean counters. Lets see if the bean counters win out. |

The RWD addition to UKL makes perfect sense. I can't imagine the future M2 editions with FWD or AWD. That car, after all, will be the true e30 m3's descendant.

BMW have lost their way. Insignificant as it may be, I will be saying so long to the brand.

I would be pretty disappointed if BMW didn't have at least one small rwd car. The 3 series is just too big now even though it drives very well, and imo the 1 and 2 are a still pretty heavy.

BMW is tempted to follow the competitors trend of cheaper FWD cars, but in reality sales it's not only about the price for the consumer, it's about value. And honestly, Audi is wining in the Design department, also their cars are getting impressively faster with less powerful engines. BMW has not even put full LED tail lights and its already considering throwing out RWD. They can play a different game, and they have to start with exquisite design, from the entrance models to the flagship models.
Maybe regular john can't tell if a 1 Series is RWD and an A3 is FWD, but probably he can see the exterior of both and guess which one may be superior. Which one looks faster/more expensive/more attractive, the S3 sedan or the M235i? The M235i is $57,190 and the S3 sedan is $50,030 USD where I live, mandatory equipped with pretty much everything. Just say no to fwd
The fact that this is being brought up makes me think the decision has already been made, and it's one that we won't like. This post is like the lube before they really bend the enthusiast over |

Can you please explain me how a FWD chassis (UKL), with a transversely mounted engine over the front axle, can be modulated to accommodate a longitudinally mounted engine "behind" the front axle? That is like saying the i8 can be adapted to fit a longitudinally mid-mounted V8.
I don't see how can it be cheaper, than just using a smaller 35-up chassis. What about the manufacturing process? |

So the 3 series will be the smallest RWD car available? Well you just screwed a large majority of the market for profits lolz. Typically enthusiasts buy in these segments as they r far to small for families / grocery getters. I don't see a majority of the market including Europe to be purchasing these cars solely for the name as they r still too expensive for that category.

There can only be one answer! RWD!!!
A 2-Series RWD line-up would make enthusiasts extremely happy but will still sell like crazy. It will also give people access to an affordable RWD perfectly tuned chassis and perpetuate BMWs reputation for building outstanding and desirable sporty mid-sized cars. Win-win situation in my opinion. |
