Trying to love my M240i but she's not loving me back
Purchased my new Sunset Orange M240i few weeks back. Was enjoying the hell out it for the first couple of weeks until the sunroof exploded for no apparent reason.
It's been at the dealership for a couple weeks now for new sunroof and some paint work. Off to a rocky start, but hopefully everything will get sorted out..... |

Can you give us some details? What were the circumstances under which it let go? Was it sitting in your garage? Did you hit a bump? Were you rear ended?

It happened on the freeway, driving normally 65-70mph. Nothing unusual, no large truck in front, no sound of rock or other projectile hitting the sunroof. Just a loud boom. Sunshade was closed so no glass pieces came in the cabin, however pieces were flying off the car causing a bit of paint damage on roof and trunk lid. Pulled over at the nearest exit. Dealership did not find any evidence of rock impact either.

Was that a special order, or did you find it that way on the dealer's lot?

Rather than the thread title, I’d compartmentalize the thought, realizing the sunroof is a module, outsourced to a Tier I supplier and shipped to Leipzig for installation. The supplier may have had a quality process issue with tempering glass or some other issue causing the glass fracture. If so, BMW will be noticing the warranty and working with the supplier on root cause and remedy. See if the part number of the new roof is the original or a superseded number, suggesting a product change. You can still love your car. It’s just one module.

At least it's good know my case is not a outlier on the 2-series. Sunroof is still a requirement for all my car purchases, I use it all the time.

I have noticed this summer when it has been extremely hot that my sunroof has had some trouble opening. It creeks when opening or closing so I have choosen not to open it on hot days until I have driven a bit so the wind have cooled down the car a bit. I guess that the metal on the roof expand so that the hole around the sunroof gets to small.

If I had a sunroof these photos would prompt me to consider having protective film installed.

I would definitely tint both sides with something if I had one now to keep the glass in. It sounded like thunder right next to me and shattered glass everywhere. They had to paint the hood, decklid and roof. Pat |

Exploding moonroof glass, typically due to rapid temp change, is a somewhat common thing, regardless of make.

I think it's a good idea to tint the sunroof as well to prevent additional damage to the paint from broken glass. |

Not in my M235 but in my old E46 325ci.
The car was sitting in the driveway, completely un-disurbed and I went out to brush a little bit of a snow dust off of it and found the sunroof shattered. I had noticed a small chip in the glass a few days prior, I don't know if it had anything to do with it though. |

This is a common occurrence with glass shower doors believe it or not. It happened to a friend of mine a few years back and ended up sending shards of glass all over her forearm while she was taking a shower. It was a bloody mess and she now has multiple scars from it. I couldn't believe it so I googled and sure enough. It happens when there is usually small crack that compromises the glass that goes unnoticed and then eventually just blows.

A tiny chip is all that is needed in a toughened glass panel to cause an explosive crack propagation due to the latent stress that makes the glass strong and hard, that is introduced in the manufacturing process. Damage at the edge or due to a fitting that isn't properly isolated from the glass (such as a sharp metal edge with no gasket or seal between it and the glass) are more likely to cause failure, but a small chip from a previous stone impact could be a disaster waiting to happen in the future.

My favorite glass-shattering incident occurred years ago. I was driving by a guy with a lawn trimmer, when suddenly the right rear passenger window shattered with what sounded like a gunshot. The trimmer had launched a pebble into the window. Luckily, there were no passengers in the car. My insurance paid for the window with no deductible, since I had full glass coverage.
Basically, unless it is a windshield, auto glass will shatter on high-speed impact into tiny shards, but normally with no sharp edges. It's designed to do that. The main lesson: Shit happens. |

The rear glass of our Lexus exploded while it was parked at my wife's workplace. Don't let this upset you. It is quite common and BMW will make it right. Good Luck.

I was never given any explanation... Let just say that when I pulled into the service department no one looked or acted surprised. Not an isolated incident: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=515758 https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1257398 https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=67304 https://www.khou.com/article/news/lo.../285-252694885 https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners...od_ids=2004753 https://abc7news.com/archive/8026317/ Pat |
