2 Series ranked most reliable BMW, and...
Not only did CR name the 2 Series the most reliable BMW, but also they moved the BMW brand up four places overall this year to #5. Top five’s a nice title!

BMW nailed the 2-series for handling, performance and fun factor.
That it is also the most reliable is only icing on the cake.

I am on my second one and haven't had a single problem with either aside from the exhaust valve that was fixed in 5 minutes.

I had an A/C coolant pump go out on my M240Xi and was replaced under warranty around 3-4K miles. Nothing surprising other than that. I just turned 20K miles and haven't had any other issues. I'm pretty pleased with it so far.

I'm closing in on two years and 20K miles with my 2016 M235. I had a CEL pop up the first winter I had it and it was related to winter fuel. The DME was reflashed. I've had no other issues with the car. I'm shocked that the car has still remained tight and essentially rattle free (sure, there a minor rattles when I hit big pavement cuts and potholes). Most cars really loosen up after 6 months.
My biggest compliant right now is straightline traction. There's simply too much low end torque, especially in 1st and 2nd gear. I have the OEM MPSS tires and they still have well over 50% tread left and are still fresh. The car easily blows through 1st from a rolling start when in Sport+, Traction Off, or DSC OFF. It will also routinely spin the tires fairly badly from a rolling punch in 2nd from 2500rpms+. As the miles have increased, I swear the car has gotten a bit more powerful as it's broken in. It's pretty dang fierce once under way considering it's stock. Oddly, my soft winter Michelin Alpin PA3s have better straightline grip than the MPSS. I can launch the car far harder and it isn't near as prone to spin from a rolling punch. The soft tread compound definitely helps. I'll be getting the MP LSD in the spring. I hope it helps to some extent. I have no interest is adding wider rear tires and I'm not convinced it would really help. Last edited by XutvJet; 10-20-2017 at 10:29 AM.. |

This is obviously good to hear for those of us with BMW's and 2 Series specifically. Hopefully it will help those considering a new 2 Series BMW be more comfortable choosing it over other vehicles they may be shopping against. More because US consumers continue to move away from sporty coupes / convertibles toward SUV's than anything else, 2 Series sales in the US continue to slide compared to previous years, which is a shame because as most of us have discovered, it's really an amazing and fun vehicle to drive on a daily basis. Speaking of sales trends, even though I think the 2 Series is the best BMW coupe / convertible, 4 Series sales in the US continue to do well and I can't quite understand why.

But... it wasn't close to the driving experience on the autoX track or simply spirited drive around here. Granted, the back seat was nicer...but my kids are in college so I don't care Very happy with my M240xi. This one might be a keeper.

I did get the (6MT) transmission replaced after 7000km. Doesn't seem to be a common problem though, so hopefully it was just a odd one out.
No other issues after almost 1 year. |

Had my M240i for about 7 months. About 3500 miles. Had the NAV go completely dead on me for about a day and a half. Came back on it's own though and haven't had any problems with it since. Other than that car has been awesome and trouble free.

Jeez that's still happening? I had this happen twice, last year, and never repeated. But mine is a '15, and thought they fixed the black screen of death..

This really wasn’t intended to be a thread about individual experiences, but rather the overall stats that point to a huge marketing and production ‘win’ for BMW.

I also do not understand the 4-series - someone explained to me that many just want a new BMW coupe and so most end up leasing that for a similar cost. I'm only happy that the 4-series exists so most people can buy that thing or else I feel there'd be too many 2-series driving around...

pretty sure most people buy the 4er over the 2er because the number is higher. 90% of BMW owners arent in it for the driving dynamics, they just want the status. for them, 4 > 2. ive actually had multiple random people ask me if my car is an m3/m4 and i have a completely stock m235i with the exception of the MP front splitter.

Agreed!
Space is the only argument I could make for the 4 series. I think there's a little more rear leg room and the trunk is bigger. It also has the 4-door varient. Still, I'll stick with the 2 series. 1year & 26k miles and no issues. Good to hear that it's getting good marks for reliability, as I plan to keep the car for at least 9 more years!

I thought I’d check TrueDelta’s reliability stats for the 2 Series to see if actual owner reviews were consistent with CR great reliability claims.
And the answer is... a resounding yes! See for yourself: https://TrueDelta – BMW-2 Series reliability I’ve kept my cars’ service and repair histories on TrueDelta to add to the database of owner-sourced input. It’s easy, and just takes a couple of minutes four times a year to update. Register your 2 Series, if you haven’t already! |
