M Performance Exhaust
I can't find any specs on the BMW M Performance Exhaust. Does it flow better than the stock unit resulting in better HP and torque, or just sound better? I'm trying to decide between the M Performance Exhaust or the Dinan exhaust.

It just sounds better. There is no real performance advantage. It is way less expensive than the Dinan unit. If you go on ebay BMW dealers will sell them there for way less than the BMW website.

go Dinan
I went with the Dinan after hearing both. Well worth the extra about 400 bucks. Dinan will give you a discount if you ask so it helps. Sounds a lot deeper and I love it!

It's an axelback so you won't get any performance increase. I have the m performance exhaust paired with the fabspeed sport cat. Can't ask for better sound.

That's a more complicated proposition.
MPE if you need to take work calls regularly in the car. Dinan if not.

IMO yes, if you do conference calls on speaker phone via BT for example. The MPE is about the limit - IMO - of not being troublesome from that regard.

OK, I'm the outlier here, but I don't understand how much you guys go through and are willing to spend just for exhaust sound with no performance increase. If it had any effect on performance, I'd be doing it in a moment, but just louder exhaust?
I've got the radio on anyway...

You're right it does nothing to increase the performance, but it enhances the experience. Which for a car that's already too fast to be fully appreciated on many public roads - might actually be money better spent.

To the OP: The real question is if you want an always "on" exhaust, or something that retains the valve. I'd recommend the Dinan midpipe. It has easily been one of the best $400 mods I've done to any car. Sounds the same in comfort/eco pro as stock, wakes the car up some in sport/sport +. |

Absolutely.....for me, when I find something to which I can't relate, it just makes me more curious to try to understand (I work in Market Research), so I was just inviting more opinions. In one friend's case, I know this is just about decibles...somehow louder means getting more attention and seeming more powerful, so that idea tickles him and it's worth the time and money.

I think it is a common misconception that exhaust is going to provide some huge increase in performance considering most OEM exhausts are designed pretty well. Of course, the caveat being you haven't done all sorts of other performance modifications. In essence, you're just paying for sound and I think it's important to do alot of research online, or if able, in person. The problem with the M240i is sometimes finding others with modification to hear in person. Personally, I've found my taste for exhaust sound when I was 24 is entirely different now at 32. At 24, I had a straight piped V8 Camaro and it was glorious and my neighbors hated me. The amount of money I've spent over the last 8 years to fix 24 year old me's taste to quiet it down said Camaro's exhaust is a lesson learned, especially considering I did it in piecemeal fashion. |

I am not in the "louder is better" group but was looking for something with some more character. When I test drove the RS3 hatch in Stockholm a few years back I really loved the sound - very distinctive being a 5-cyl.
I actually didn't give the MPE a whole lot of thought until I was in the work garage one day, ended up parked next to a colleague with a 911 4S. We started our cars at the same time and the sound of his obviously dwarfed mine especially in a confined space, so I kind of got a real sense of what my car could sound like with a more aggressive rumble. The MPE at least doesn't strike me as overly juvenile or obnoxious - kind of like loosening the reigns on the car versus making a big change, if that makes sense.

I went with Dinan. They had a really good year end sale and was about the same price as an MPE. My dealer matched the online Dinan price.

So I am currently having a M240i transported to my dealer now.
My salesperson told me that it was possible to get a tune that would make the output of the M240i the same as the M2. He told me that I would need to purchase the tune and the exhaust. It would be official from BMW and I would retain my warranty. So I looked on line and did find the exhaust available. I was never able to find a tune online for the M240i but I was able to see the tune available for other models. My salesman told me yesterday that for the M240 the tune comes with the exhaust. He quoted me $2216 for the tune and exhaust installed. Somehow I am having trouble believing that the tune comes with the exhaust, especially since I cannot find any documentation anywhere stating so. |

That is correct since some dealers are also Dinan reps I am sure the tune was Dinan but the price seems cheap - must be the Dinan sport he was quoting - getting my dinan stage 1 tune and the MPE installed next week -then be ready for racing in april!!!!
