Windshield Washer Pump
Pump went out today at 47k miles. Thinking of just replacing it myself being that my typical dealership scenario will be:
Day 1: Trouble shooting & conclusion that the pump has a short to ground error code. Phone call from BMW Service ~ need 1 day to order new part Day 2: Part Arrives at Dealership Day 3: Part is installed and phone call from dealership late in the day that car is ready for pick-up around 5pm (rush hour traffic) 50/50 that I get a Loaner --------So - I will just fix it myself ($40.00 VDO Part) as I did on the 335i however that failed around 80k. |

I'm at 40k miles and my washer fluid system has malfunctioned twice now. I actually just got it back from the dealership yesterday after the second malfunction. Both times they had to replace the entire system including the reservoir because I guess it is all one piece.

Photo Of Bmw Vs Vdo Pump
Notice the BMW Pump has <POM> stenciled on the pump body. I think it stands for Piece of Manure. BMW $60.00 VDO/Conti $17.00 or less if shop around. Took me 2 hours this morning. Better than covered under warranty but a 3 day turn around. |

Our local dealership was very active in warning about using certain wash mixes that have silicone (I think it was silicone, or some other additive - I remember that Rain-X was the main brand to avoid). They said it would kill the seals in the pump, and they had already replaced several units (well before the 40k mile point). IIRC, this was under warranty, or sounded like they were footing the bill. I'm guessing that was their motivation to warn us - that from then on they weren't on the hook as we had been warned. Can't hurt for those who don't want to go DIY to try for a covered repair.

Maynard,
Interesting... I had three Audi's fail for washer fluid level devices due to Rain-X fluid use, but never a pump. The conductivity portion of the sensor would eventually not function due to the chemical properties of the washer fluid. I love Rain-X fluid and it is all I use, since I typically do not use my wipers... Guess I will need to be prepared for a potential failure. Thank you for the info!

Is replacing washer pump in a 2 series the same procedure as replacing in a 3 series. There are videos on youtube showing 3 series replacement but I could not find one for a 2 series.

I got the wheel well panel out and removed the washer tank screw. I see in the manual that I need to pull the tank up and forward to release it from the guides but I can't get it to come out. There's not much to get hold of or get any leverage on it. Anyone have any suggestions for getting the tank to come loose.

Wiper fluid washer stopped today working on my 2016 228i. Can it be a bad fuse? If so, where is it in car, front or back and which number. I have an extended warranty which I purchased when I bought the CPO vehicle. Is this issue generally covered?

My question on my 2018 230i vert is that the reservoir apparently went dry and after topping up the fluid it will only spurt a few drops with each pull. Technically it still works, just not as efficiently as before. The pump still makes noise, so I know it is not dead. Is it possible that it has lost its "prime" or has a clog? Only 31k on clock, but sadly no warranty. Ideas will be appreciated. Thanks.

Where did you get this from? I use generic washer fluid and have had zero issues for the last 6 years and 80,000 miles.

I find it hysterical that a dealer would warn about using silicone fluids that would cause seal issues? Or even sensors for that matter. I call BS because I use and have used RainX since it came out and the only vehicles injad issues on the pump or any part of the washer system were on vehicles that were KNOWN to have issues with them, regardless of actual washer fluid used.
Just saying... |

First, here is the location of your two fuse boxes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=kZsuPbYj8D0 Second, I recall reading somewhere there is no fuse for the washer motor, its fed by the FEM module (which has its own fuse). That might be why the "fuse location" paper you found shows a car on a lift instead of a fuse number. If that is true, you need to locate the pump, disconnect, put a meter on the wires and have someone try and activate the pump. If there is voltage, you know the pump is getting power so it is bad. Common causes: you used straight water in the reservoir, which was warmed by the engine and grew mold, which fowled the pump. Or, you used a washer fluid with something that clogged the pump (like rainx). If there is no voltage at the pump, find your FEM module (should be in footwell area) and find the wires that go to the pump and see if you get voltage out when someone activates the pump. If you do, there is a cut wire somewhere between FEM and the pump. If not, your FEM module may be bad (did it get wet?). Good luck! |
