Stalling?

Yesterday I went to a touchless car wash. The kind of car wash that you drive in yourself and nothing touches your car except for water and soap. It's all automated.

When the car was getting washed, it felt like the car was about to stall. The rpm was dropping a little and for a second there I thought it would stall. I gave it some gas. I was in N with the hand brake on the whole time. After the wash I drove out and everything was fine. No more stalling like symptoms. All this happen near the end of the wash.

I thought the fuel pump issue was limited to the 335 or does it affect the 330 as well?

Maybe an excessive amount of moisture was getting into the engine since it was only having trouble during the wash.

As far as I know, this fuel pump issue had been affecting the 3-series since 2000.

It could even be earlier, but I do not have information prior to 2000.

That's what I though at first. But I've been to this car wash a few times before when I don't have time to fully wash by hand and especially during the winter time.

Did anyone with a E90 330i had fuel pump issues?

"THE" fuel pump issue is only on 2007 cars with direct injection, and the new seimens pump. so a USA 330 does not have the second high pressure pump (the one that is failing)

OP: its not your high pressure fuel pump... you dont have one

Shutting down the engine for a 2min wash? Do you do that when you're stopped at the red light all the time?

Eliminating the problem? That problem shouldn't even exist! Oh, it's raining, let me shut down the engine.

i don't think you've said "SAVE YOU GAS" enough times

OH and um. i think it takes more gas to shut down your engine and turn it back on rather than to jus leav it on... just another thought

i think that you probably were getting some water in the intake. Those car washes spray high pressure water directly into the front grille where the intake scoops are. So it was probably that. I don't think it was anything to be worried about.

I went to one of those car washes and my car wasn't very clean when i left.

On a side note, when washing my car with ignition off (everything off), and spray water into the kidney grill, I hear a 5 long hum that starts after I take away the water nozzle. Maybe there is a water detection mechanism somewhere?

Idling 2 min is long. I mean...30 seconds of idling is fine but 2 min? If everyone does this, that's a lot more exhausts per year. While no one asks you to drive the most fuel economic car, do your part in minimizing the exhausts. It's as simple as pressing the start/stop button.

first of all i wouldve turned off the engine too...its not about saving money or gas, its better for the engine. its never good to let the engine idle for more than 2-5 min.... like the idiots who leave there car on when refueling. also it says in the OP that the ebrake was ON. that sounds like a moron to me.

What's wrong with that?? His car didn't need to move and he didn't feel like holding the brake pedal down.

I have that happen all the time, your car does it alot but you don't notice it because your doing other things. When sitting in a closed carwash your car engine is more noticable.

The mist the wash generates get atomized and cools your car off, the engines idle adjust slightly. It's not an problem or an issue, just a part of life.

WTF are you talking about. Are you so jaded you think 2 ~ 5 minutes of idleing your car has an impact on anything?

Do your part in WHAT? Educate yourself on greenhouse gases and don't fall to the ploy of All Gore'ism and his crusade to make people think we cause global warming...! At most, Humans might be accelerating a natural cycle of mother earth's heating and cooling by a mere 2%.

I can't believe a guy post about a issue he discovered while at a car wash and some liberal sneaks in a political epitaph..!

Ha, that's the other part of the story you are not aware of. As far as BMW goes, they will switch suppliers if they are able to find a source with the lower costs, be it Bosch, Siemens, or some other vendors.

A retired BMW certified technician told me BMW got into trouble multiple times because they thought they found a reliable supplier with a "magical" way of providing the same product/part with lower costs. It turns out the "magical" formula turns out to be the good old way of cutting corners, which in turns provides a lower quality and less reliable part/product.

Sweet dude, you probably save a nickel every time you get a car wash. So if you wash your car once a week for 100 years you saved like $250
