【The History of BMW】Chapter IV-Usher in a New Century (the end)
BMW celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016 What has it been through during the 100 years From a manufacturer of aircraft engine renewing flying altitude, to a huge automobile group selling 2.2 million cars nowadays? We’ll unveil the innovative century of BMW with funny cartoons next! In1871, with consistent strategic efforts of Otto von Bismarck, Bavaria got merged into The Kingdom of Prussia, marking the unification of Germany. Berlin, the great city became capital Germany officially. After 120 years (till 1991), Helmut Kohl, the longest serving (16 years) and tallest (1.93 m) German chancellor, led his troop marched to Berlin from Bonn (capital of West Germany, and hometown of famous musician Beethoven), making Berlin capital of the newly united country. Berlin Wall, the barrier once divided Germany in two was dismantled as well. People celebrated on a large scale. The whole country was bathed in a sea of joy. Now, in the Berlin plant of BMW was preparing for a great celebration as well: the millionth BMW Mottorrad—K 75 RT was to come the off assembly line for launch. Since the launch of R32 in 1932, motorcycles produced by BMW could be lined to The Arctic from BMW Berlin plant. Meanwhile, the classic “Boxer” series engine got updated as well. With a four-valve structure (replacing the former two-valve structure), an air-cooled cylinder and oil-cooling cylinder cap, the overall performance of boxer engine got largely improved. four-valve boxer engine As the first motorrad with new generation boxer engine, BMW R 1100 RS was launched for sale in 1993, marking a new era of BMW motorrad. In this era, BMW has been through a couple of "good" things~[/CENTER] First, the first “American” and longest serving chief designer of BMW, Chris Bangle took the helm. The great designer insisting on innovation contributed several classic BMW models. Second, BMW South Carolina Plant was officially opened in 1994. Third, American Godfather of Soul, James Brown appeared in the micro film of BMW-“Beat The Devil” at the turn of the century. Besides, a whole bunch of super stars like Madonna, Ang Lee and Kar Wai Wong acted in or directed a series of BMW micro films, creating several classics. In the meantime, BMW North America plant bred a new car series—the X series. X5, as the first model of X series, opened up a whole new SAV market around the world. "I know AV~ What’s SAV then?" SAV has nothing to do with “AV”. It’s short for Sports Activity Vehicle. With similar steering ability of traditional SUV and larger space, SAV is self-adaptive to various road conditions. Especially X5, its representative work, displays extraordinary stability on highways, which even humiliates traditional SUV. Bucks tinkle ~ Nickers Clink! Since 1990, BMW has successively taken in two classic car brands, stylish MINI and noble Rolls-Royce, forming an unbreakable premier league. Till today, MINI and Rolls-Royce has become market representatives of their respective market segments through continuous innovation. In 2000, BMW Motorrad rolled out another magical model—BMW C1. With an innovative sturdy awning and five-point safety harness, this landmark scoter was easily recognized at first sight. In an innovative motorcycle collision test, BMW C1 was proved to meet rigorous safety standards. Thus, BMW C1 became the first motorcycle unnecessary to wear a helmet while riding on. Without the restraint of heavy protectors, BMW C1 offered an ideal travel solution for urban citizens. iDrive BMW always attached great importance to man-machine engineering design inside the cockpit. For instance, lean to driver side center console, streetlight like amber interior backlight and etc. Till 2001, BMW 7er used iDrive system for the first time, leading in a significant revolution in the auto field. iDrive system is the early product of user experience research in the auto field. The driver needn’t lower his/her head to navigate and adjust the volume. They could be more concentrated on driving and more relaxed in control. In 2011, the 4th generation BMW 5er went through a face-lifting. The classic circular dual headlights got surrounded by four mysterious “apertures”, marking the birth of BMW classic “Angel Eyes” ! Besides looking much sportier, “Angel Eyes”, father of all daytime running lights, has obviously reduced road accident rate on the daytime as well. Whether for cars or passers-by, the lightening “Angel Eyes” are easy to be spotted at first sight. GINA: Car with “Skin” “Sometimes tightly shut, sometimes wide open, glittering eyes show off her strong heart”—this is the mysterious BMW GINA Concept Car. Above its aluminum alloy chassis, covering a body shell made of synthetic elastic fibers, which is deformable based on different needs. Catering to low carbon environmental protection requirement, BMW prospectively created a new sub-brand: BMW i Series. All i models were driven by pure electric or petrol-electric hybrid power, like i3 and i8, the two representative models of I Series. Among all limited models of BMW, i8 mostly resembles its concept car. As the first limited car with laser headlights, i8 successfully controlled its weight on the premise of ensuring passive safety using a carbon fiber body. We can say, i8 is a super sport coming from the future! M4 GTS In recent years, BMW continued its original pursuit of pure driving pleasure. All new BMW M4 GTS is just a typical representative. With enhanced design in engine tuning and body light-weighting, M4 GTS managed to run at fastest lap of 7min27s at Nurburgring Nordschleife, which even surpassed several super cars in nowadays! "At the end of 【The History of BMW】series, let’s review the innovative trials of BMW in different fields during the past 100 years once again. I believe, whether a BMW owner or just an enthusiast, you will add more love and trust to this brand."
From highest in sky to fastest on earth! In 1937, Ernst Henne broke world motorcycle speed record riding R32 motorrad, reaching the astonishing speed of 279.5km/h. Father of Light-weighting In 1936, BMW 328 was officially debuted. With an in-line six-cylinder engine covered by an aluminum alloy head, an aluminum alloy body frame weighting only 32 kg, BMW 328 swept international racing ground for years. A Flexible “Egg”! BMW Isetta, with a rear engine and V4 manual transmission, was affectionately called “BMW Egg” by enthusiasts. The tiny body and unique front-opening door made it an ideal travel solution for cities. Hofmeister Kink BMW 1500 series used the C-Pillar kink designed by Hofmeister. With this kink, the rear window could be lowered down completely, providing more space for passengers siting in the rear seats. Besides, it looked much sportier. Thus, Hofmeister Kink became another classic design of BMW family. Father of Turbocharge In 1973, BMW M launched 2002 Turbo Series. The hot hatch was the first limited turbocharged model in Europe. With excellent turbocharging tech., BMW championed F1 World Championship 10 years later. The Innovation Road of Motorrad BMW R 90/S was the first motorcycle with front fairing in the world, which largely enhanced the overall high speed performance of motorcycles. R 80 G/S was the first motorcycle using rear single rocker arm tech, which championed Paris Dakar Rally continuously for several years.
