240hp - 228i engine performance in 428i Coupe
On this site it was noted somewhere that the 228i will use the same 240hp engine which is now in the 4 series. I believe I also read here that the 10hp comes from an added software package.
The 428i with the 240hp twin turbo, with 8 speed Sport automatic trans. does the 0-60 in 5.7 sec. The 428i weighs 3470lbs. In contrast the 230hp - 128i does 0-60 in 6.7 sec. using the 6 speed steptronic auto trans, weighing in at 3285 lbs. Assuming the 228i will weigh closer to 3285 than to 3470, this ll it is trending positive. In fact, 1 second seems like a huge difference in the heavier car with only a 10 hp difference -- maybe the 8 speed auto trans is a game changer??? For the time being it is comparing apples to oranges, i.e, will have to wait for 2 series specs. BTW I'd really prefer the M235i but I doubt all - season tires will be available and I'm done with snowtires, so seriously considering 228i. |

Second, the 8s does help with acceleration, but the additional torque of the N20 over the older N52 of the E82 128i also helps. A manual F30 328i is also a good bit quicker than the manual E90 328i that preceded it. |

To Red Bread- actually I did not know that. I was on Tire Rack website trying to hypothetically outfit 135i's , M Coupes, M3's with all seasons and I was not able to get a match, except for an earlier year 135i there was only one choice available. So, I gave up on the idea of all seasons on the m235i. So, thanks.

Just one Imola M Coupe (although mine was an E36/8) owner trying to help out another. Our X1 has 224/45/18 P7 A/S's. They're not great traction wise, but they do ride well. I'll consider non RFT Michelin Pilot A/S 3's as a replacement though. We ran non RFT Michelins on our 135i and the ride was much better than the stock Bridgestones.

Well if we went manual vs manual, there is a big difference in the engine.
The N52 rated at 230 hp and 200 torque. Dynos have shown 200 hp and 170 torque The N20 rated at 240 hp and dynos have shown if is making around there. BMW recently had been super under rating their engines. Not only that, but the newer engine is much torquier Automatic vs automatic, the new ZF 8 speed shifts lightning fast compared to the GM 6 that is in my 128i, so no surprise there. Also, I believe the 2014 autos now all have launch control, something that the previous car did not

i simply do not understand the hype behind these 8 speed ZF automatic gearboxes.
i have driven many of them now...on BMWs and on Audis and find them utterly irritating. They are always switching gears in automatic mode as they never seem to be in the right gear or stable in a gear, and in manual mode it is nowhere near as engaging as a dual clutch gearbox. It's a real cop out to have a car like this and run an autobox, IMO.....it needs a better gearbox like a manual or a dual clutch, IMO. the ZF 8 speed is like the halfway between a regular old automatic box and a dual clutch; so it's a comprimise. |

in my A3, i have a DSG and i'm 99% of the time in manual mode....unless i'm in heavy traffic where i pop it into D. Otherwise i like to be in control of the gears. In the ZF 8 speed, i got confused in manual mode as there are just so many gears to choose from! ha. i have to say that it's not as smooth in manual mode as any good dual clutch gearbox, but it does feel efficient and pretty decent for a torque converted system i have to say. the ZF gearbox is being used in all sorts of 'enthusiastic' applications....from the new Jaguar F-Type to the Audi S6/S7 to the F30 BMWs, M135i, etc... |

After test driving the 3 Series a few times and a couple of 6 series Gran Coupe, one of them being a 650i with M Sport. I have to say the new 8spd ZF's are just as good as VW/Audi's DSG, which is saying a lot!
I'll be getting my M235i with the ZF 8spd. It would be nice to get the 7spd DCT as an option, but it sounds like they are being reserved for the ///M models. |
