Just by chance I got talking to someone at a track event here in the UK and it turned out he works for the company that supplies instrument panels to the likes of BMW, Mercedes and Audi. He was saying that they are all seriously considering doing away with them completely, in favour of HUDs. That is, there's just be nothing behind the steering wheel at all. You'd still have the central map display and controls for what the HUD displayed, which would be at minimum a speedometer, plus whatever you decided you also wanted to see.

Not sure that I like this idea but I suppose things move on ....
