This is a great discovery and thanks for taking the chance. If known can you share the build date of your car and the part number of your head unit. I have a 4/14 build non nav 228 and am contemplating this hack but I'm a bit uncertain as you mention 3/14 and 7/14 as relevant build dates.
I'd add the touch Idrive here as a logical extension of the original idea as well as a titled thread.
