I did get it to work every time on my 17 M240i now. The trick is to start the car within seconds after unlocking your door, before the "M performance" word on the instrument cluster pops up (if u have that coded).
However, if you didn't give your car enough time to shut off completely then the next time you restart your car, it will just bring you straight to the main menu (in my case the driver profile selection).
Basically, I only see the M animation screen when I start the car the next morning.
As mentioned by another member, I guess BMW cares more about giving u access to the iDrive system instead of showing u an animation screen.

verified to work with pp on all 16 and newer 2ers for the m animation, doesnt work on a 15.
