I've owned a dozen BMW since 1983- from an E24 M6 to an i3. I've found the key to avoiding most expensive repairs is to be fastidious about maintenance. I also have a good indie shop as well as an excellent dealer that doesn't overcharge for service or parts. Yes, VC and OFH gaskets are practically a maintenance item these days, but aside from that my BMWs haven't been all that expensive to maintain.
