Great question! Here's the skinny. Everytime a sparkplug fires, a few microscopic combustion particles get passed the compression and oil rings. After many miles thes microscopic particles add up. This determines the OCI.
Now, gasoline in the USA is not ulta-low sulphur gasoline. But, our diesel is ulta-low sulphur diesel. So, using a BMW LL04 oil in a gasoline fired BMW in the USA requires shorter OCI as it's not designed to handle the sulphur-based by-products.
