When I used to let my 2 go out in the snow, I ran 215/50-17 on BBS SR wheels over the blue caliper MSport brakes. No issues. Actually, 205/50-17 are a closer match to the overall OE circumference, but either of those work just fine. No need to go as wide as 225 for a winter tire where narrower is better.

BTW, in Canada, I wouldn't go for the lure of so-called "performance winter" tires. Get studless winter (unless you are only in Toronto city limits where the snow is well plowed). Recommend Michelin XIce xi3 or Blizzak WS80. Those brands. Those models.
