Pretty sure the primary reasons for the M2 break in service are actually the reset of the computer to enable some more performance and changing the rear diff fluid, of course it doesn't hurt to change oil at the same time which is why I believe they do it but I don't know of any other N55 that requires an oil change at the 1200 mile break in point.
I drove my e90 215,000 miles and it is still running great with its new owner, I only changed the oil at the required intervals because I drove a lot of highway miles. If I had an M240i I would probably do an initial oil change before 10k and then just stick with the normal intervals unless I was doing a fair amount of track days.
