Had the same build up issue with my DTC60s. Tends to happen to hot brake dust/ wear metals and water, in particular.
I spent a good 30-45 mins (per wheel) to get the stuff off. I used sonax wheel cleaner (many applications), and decently stiff brushes and a tooth brush.
