I've seen a rear passenger go through a windscreen after a really minor collision at just 50mph. Not even the driver's fault. This young guy was going to have to live with the injury for the rest of his life, as far as I could see - and I wasn't sure he was even alive. If it's a choice of irritating inconvenience vs tragic convenience, I'd go for the former every time.
