I have always purchased winter wheels and tires from Tirerack, wheels always 1" diameter less than stock. The folks there will be able to tell you which wheels will fit with your brakes. That is usually the big issue.
17" because they are less likely to burst open when you hit a pothole.
The downside of this route is that Tirerack is not cheap, but if and when you sell the vehicle, you will be able to recoup some of the cost.
