Once the warranty has expired, of course you're going to have to deal with whether you should buy an extended warranty and where you take your baby for service.

I am on my 3rd BMW and that means almost 20 years of driving, and over 200,000 miles of solid performance. I've never bought an extended warranty and I've made out OK.

What I did learn is that it is so important to find a good mechanic who knows BMW's if you are not going to use your dealer. I learned the hard way: at 85K on my '98 528 the water pump failed; I took it to the nearest mechanic and the repair lasted only 2 weeks because he did not use a BMW replacement part. But I then did some research and found a shop that only services BMW's. That shop was the only place I ever touched my BMW's (after the dealer warranty expired).

When my 228 goes off warranty, I'll be taking it to him for service.
