Or Audi. The A3 has sold between 18k-36k the last 5 years. CLA has been between 20k-30k. Combined CLA/A3 sales very nearly equal 3er sales, so BMW will be challenged to get high volume sales from the 2GC without just cannibalizing the 3er. |
I don't think BMW losing market share of the 3er to a smaller chassis from the same company has been the issue.
Although that's precisely the kind of thinking that caused BMW to NOT not sell a compact sedan in the US , and has eventually led them to lose overall market share in the small to medium size premium luxury segment.
BMW was so afraid of " cannibalizing their own sales " they let their two main competitors beat them at their own game by producing smaller compact sedans while BMW NA trotted out a 1er and 2er in coupe form only.
BMWs irrational fear of cannibalizing sales extends back to when when they refused to build an E46 M3 Sedan ( after wildly successful E36 M3/4 sales ). because they were so concerned that they would lose M5 sales.
