Cruise control with braking just applies the brakes if you are going down hill and exceed the speed you set in the cruise control. Mine (2021 M240) does it all the time, it is subtle, but noticeable. Compared to our 2018 Pacifica which just keeps down shifting until you finally get some engine braking at near red line, which I hate.
The radar in the grill (which the 2 series does not have) is for the adaptive cruise which keeps you a set distance from the car in front regardless of the speed you set in cruise control.
I have only seen the red car light up when on a curvy road where there was a vehicle that I would have hit if I didn't take the curve. No alarms so far.
