Trunk fails to engage.

Addicts,

Problem ran into this weekend thought I'd share for future observers.

Identification: Was driving when I noticed the ! sign displayed in the dash and realized it was the trunk open as I was driving, so I exited quickly at the stoplight, opened the trunk and closed it. When I arrived home to pop the trunk the problem happened.

Problem: Trunk cannot be opened. Instead the trunk mechanism makes a whirring or clicking sound attempting to be opened.

Troubleshooting: Behavior exists no matter what method of trying to open the trunk is attempted (key, driver-side open switch, manual release on rear of vehicle).

Investigation: Cannot enter into the trunk by any means including the seats as they can only be released from within the trunk and mine were locked. Local BMW dealer could not do anything in a quick fashion so I have made an appt for 2 days from now to see if there is an actuator failure.

I've tried the brute force method with no resolution but will keep attempting. (laterally, up/down, tried pushing down with force to re-engage and pop up)

Update with Resolution:

Dealership confirmed I did have a faulty actuator, confirmed the failure through hardware testing. Part was ordered (had one month left on warranty...crazy) and received a loaner car (free of charge because "the dealer would not have had to order it if they had the part in stock" and then they installed and we were ready to go!

This was the first time the dealer had seen this actuator fail. They actually did what Zwei below mentioned, took a long thin tool to go inbetween the rear seats...but at this point I'm not sure if they used that to pop the rear seat or pull the internal handle.
