Strangely, I never got it on the N54, but got it twice on the N55 (the computer warning me that I was low on oil). With the N55 it was always around that 13.5 - 14K mile marker since the last service interval - all the BMWs I have had had the 15K mile service intervals.
The M235 is 10 though, I believe....
And yes, with synthetic oil and more efficient engines, I think you're right - they're just able to run better for longer periods of time, making the "checking" less frequent and easily accomplished by the computer.
