Just to update this post a bit, Apple CarPlay is now available for retrofit without 609 Nav. I have enhanced Bluetooth and the WiFi hotspot/wireless charging add on, but I did not purchase nav on my 2018 230i. Steve @ codemybimmer got it working yesterday for a little more than the cost of an MMI unit. Worth it since it's wireless and fully integrated.
I retrofitted the larger screen but that's a matter of coding a different resolution so it should work on the 6.5" screen. You can see that I still have the non nav idrive controller.
