My car is AWD, so a FWD might have a few more MM between shock and tire. Also I'm running Michelin Ps4s tires. Not sure if those are wider or thinner than average 245s.

A 245/40-18 is both wider and taller than the 245/35-18 which has the OEM tire circumference. That would explain the clearance issue you had. I've got just under 10mm clearance between the tire and strut with the 245/35-18 PS4 tires and et43 wheels.
