I have auto-dimming/heated mirrors and have swapped to the euro aspherical mirror (also heated/dimming). I can tell you that auto dimming is definitely an active system, and is controlled by the white connector on the mirror. The heater runs off the two spade connectors, and you can tell they're for the heater because you can see the heating traces running from the connectors. I don't think there's any issue leaving one or both unconnected should you have a car without those options.
