You can't go wrong with the above philosophy. I find the biggest issue is finding an accurate tire gauge. I've used a variety of them all report different pressures when tested on the same tire (as much as 4 pounds diff at times).

I finally arrived a a method that seems to work pretty well. Using the "Husky" pump gauge I run the PSI's 4 lbs more than recommended and then tested with another gauge they are "spot on". The TPMS show the correct pressures also.

If you follow a 35 PSI middle ground you should be in a decent tire pressure operating range.
