I've added a few more updates to my initial post (#1) for people who are considering going this route.
I really can't see dumping up to $2K for a system when, for less than 1/4 of that price, you can get a pretty decent sounding system with none of the unpleasant surprises people have been experiencing with the pricier alternatives that involve messing with the computerized electronics.
