You don't need an intercooler but if you want to gain horsepower its definitely a recommended.
As you increase boost you create more heat and reduce efficiency, which reduces potential horsepower gains and overall consistency between back to back runs.
As you heat soak the engine, you will have less and less power as the stock intercooler heat soaks.
