My local dealer has a standing offer on the M240i to add all the retro-fit M Performance extras at a big discount on a new M240i order - I'm guessing pretty much at cost to them. They've even done a video and sent it out to all their customers. Thay'll also de-badge as part of the package.

Talking to the dealer at a recent visit, it's worth it to them to capture people who are considering an M2 but then get put off by the wait. While there is a core of people ordering M2s who know exactly what they're getting, he said they find that a lot of people who try the M240i conclude it's more suitable as their only car and DD. And they have stock M240is that they can convert straight away.

I'm sure other dealers have figured this approach out, so it's just BMW responding to a demand that their dealers have identified.
