The N20 of that vintage is fine. Unless your father plans to tune the car to within a hair's width of its design tolerances, the motor is as reliable as any other BMW has made recently -- particularly after BMW addressed the two flaws it
did have when it was first introduced in 2011: that timing chain, and the fuel pump.
